Playmates Reveals SDCC 2016 Exclusive TMNT Toy

We’ve already discussed a few TMNT collectibles that were made exclusively for Comic-con, but it wouldn’t be SDCC without something special from Playmates Toys. Unfortunately, their offering this year might not appeal to many audiences, as it is essentially a new paint job for a previously existing figure. As you can see, this Bebop figure is the same toy you’ll find on store shelves right now. You can even get a set that has Bebop with his trike, so their exclusive here is literally just a repackaging of a set they previously produced for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.

So what makes this an SDCC exclusive? Well, a quick look at both the basic Bebop set and this limited edition collectible reveals that Playmates used higher quality paint for the Comic-con version of the toy. Instead of using gray or silver paint for the exhaust pipes, they went the extra mile and spent a bit more on metallic paint for this purpose. The gold accents on the trike are also quite impressive, but you won’t find many other differences between the two sets. Some fans will definitely be interested in this collectible, but something tells me that this won’t be very popular.

This SDCC exclusive TMNT set will be limited to 500 pieces, but I would be surprised to see much demand for it. Even so, if you want this collectible, it might be wise to make your way to the Playmates booth as early as possible. With such a limited print run, chances are that even a simple improved paint job might be enough to drive sales for this Bebop with Trike set. Perhaps I’m being too harsh, but when you consider that they actually did a Metal Mutants Leonardo last year, it’s easy to understand why some fans might be disappointed in the offering from Playmates Toys this year.

What do you think? Am I being too harsh? Is this limited edition Playmates set an awesome SDCC exclusive, or is it a bit unimpressive? Let us know your thoughts either in the comments below or via facebook/twitter.
