Every new version of the TMNT means a new Playmates toy line.Playmates toys is still the first company to carry every version of the Ninja Turtles. With the upcoming movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem coming soon, we’re starting to see the promo material for the new toy line. There are tons of details in the descriptions, accessories, and packaging. We took a deep dive in to the announcement trailer, now let’s take a deeper look at the Mutant Mayhem toy line.
Bustin out of the New York Sewers are four bodacious brothers ready to kick butt! Born from mysterious mutant ooze, these tubular turtles and their radical rat dad have trained in the art ninjitsu to become a bad-guy bashin super team. With their buddy April O’Neil, they’re about to face the gnarliest mutants the world has ever seen.

Leonardo Standard Figure
Leo’s the Leader!
From Leonardo’s bio, it looks like he isn’t quite the leader he wants to be. It’s unclear if it’s his brothers or the bad guys who don’t take him seriously, but he has a bit of work to do before he can take charge.
All the turtles are keeping their classic weapons. Leo’s dream is “to be a fearless leader”, so we might be looking at a very single minded Leo.
Donatello Standard Figure
Donnie is still a genius. And it seems like he’s a little smug about it! He’s going to be the “Um, actually…” of the brothers. His dreams of being a game dev by day and a K-pop star by night is really funny. I could see him suffering from anxiety based on his indecisiveness.
His accessories are a fanny pack (also funny) and headphones. I also like that this Donatello wears glasses as part of his regular design. He’s worn goggles, but I’m betting these are prescription. I dont think we’ve seen him wear glasses in any other playmates line, so it’s refreshing to see it in the Mutant Mayhem toy line.
Raphael Standard Figure
Raphael looks to have the same aggro tendencies we’re used to, but we could see his sensitive side explored more. We’ve seen it a bit in the past, like when dealing with Slash in the 2012 series or his romantic interests. But now it’s said outright- he just wants someone to talk to. This could mean we see a premutated Slash as his pet in this version as well, or Raph is really just a sensitive boy hiding under a tough shell.
He also likes to break things and his dream is to be an MMA fighter, so we’re still going to see a tough guy Raph. He might get the turtles in to some trouble due to wanting to rush in to a fight.
Michelangelo Standard Figure
Mikey- I’m actually really excited for Michelangelo. I like that they just say outright that he wants to be a comedian. It looks like he needs a bit of work to do as a turtle, but we all knew/know someone like this. Never on time, maybe a little unkept at times. His brothers may not think he’s funny, but we’ll probably think he’s hilarious.
Additional Notes
This is a really good look at the villains in the movie. We’re getting a full body shot of Bebop, Rocksteady, and a first look at Leatherhead and new character Superfly. I really love the new looks for Bebop and Rocksteady. I’m wondering if Superfly the toy will be able to stand on his own with such strange legs, but maybe they’ll have a counter balance. Leatherhead looks great. What is really interesting is that the design look like the classic versions of the characters we know from prior iterations, just squashed and stretched in to a new version.
Mutant Mayhem Toy Line Vehicles
Pizzafire Van
They went heavy on the nostalgia for the vehicles. The pizza van is taking an obvious heavy inspiration from the original turtle van from the 80’s/90’s. It’s the same yellow and green color scheme and the same boxy shape. And it fires pizzas, so you can fire them at the bad guy and lose them under the couch until you move.
Ninja Kick Cycle
Battle Cycle
Both cycles have similar features, and we can take a lot of the same info from both. A lot of the features on both bikes, as well as the van, looks cobbled together from the streets. The sidecar is a garbage can. The wheels might be sewer lids. And certain parts have that translucent color similar to the ooze. I wonder if the ooze will be a mainstay in the story. We already know this will act as an origin story for the turtles, but the ooze might be more than that in the overall story.
Giant Size and Ninja-Talkin
There isn’t much to say about these, except that I’m glad that this version of the TMNT will get the Giant-Size treatment. I’m hoping for a giant sized Bebop and Rocksteady with these designs.
It’s really nice to see the Mutant Mayhem toy line isn’t shying away from the franchises roots, while inserting it’s own versions of the characters.
This is only giving us a bit of a look at the dialogue of the turtles. I admit, it’s nice to see Cowabunga make it’s catchphrase return. And this gives us more of a look into just how smug Donatello is.
The only other big note is the YouTube link advertising “New Webisodes & More!” This will probably mean more of this version of the TMNT, but I can still hold out for more shorts from different artists like these.
