TMNT: Last Ronin Video Game in Development

by Kyle Tobey

A new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game is in development. But, unlike a side scrolling beat-‘em-ups like Shredder’s Revenge, or a retro collection like the recently released “Cowabunga Collection”, this looks to be a AAA title more in line with God of War. It’s official, a new TMNT video game based on the Last Ronin is in development!

In an interview with Polygon, Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, the rights holders for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In an interview with Polygon last week, Rosen likened the upcoming third-person action role-playing game to Sony’s recent God of War titles and said it will be authentic to the story of The Last Ronin arc, which is set in a future where only one of the turtles has survived.

Like the comic, it sounds like the video game will take a similar approach to the more mature content. Most, or all TMNT games have focused on the 4 brothers as a team. But this new game will likely focus the attention solely on the Last turtle. But, like with the comic, I wouldn’t be shocked to play as the other brothers in flashback sequences.

While no studio or release window is yet attached, this is exciting news for anyone hoping for a more mature version of the TMNT! The Last Ronin comic series released in 2020 was a smash hit for IDW and the franchise. The comic led to adaptations in statues, action figures, spin-off series and more. The series was a drastic departure from the usual “kid friendly” versions of the Ninja Turtles. This was an adult oriented series originally thought up by TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in the original Mirage era of the comics. We were shown the deaths of the turtles. We were shown death and loss, and were given a true revenge tale. Hopefully, these themes can transfer to a new media without losing the deeper meaning under the surface.

What do you want to see from the upcoming Last Ronin game? Are you excited for a different version of the Mature themed comic? Would you rather see a game featuring the 4 brothers together? Let us know in the comments!
