Will Paramount Move Forward With TMNT 3?

Back in 2014, the box office results for the first weekend alone were enough to convince Paramount to make a sequel for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Sadly, it’s been a few weeks since the release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, and the studio has yet to announce any such plans for the future. Many of the actors have been signed on for multiple films, but there is no guarantee that the studios will actually move forward with TMNT 3.

There are a lot of factors to consider when trying to determine whether or not this sequel will be made. With their first attempt at a Ninja Turtles film, they managed to rake in enough money during the opening weekend to pay for the production budget, and the film made enough money during its entire theatrical run to warrant the production of a sequel. Unfortunately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows didn’t fare as well at the box office during its opening weekend, and it has taken until just recently for the film to earn back its production budget through worldwide box office receipts.

As many fans have rightfully pointed out, the film has yet to be released in China. Given that the first movie in the franchise made roughly $50 million in China alone, chances are that the release of the sequel in markets such as this will provide a pretty big boost to the overall box office numbers. However, we have yet to see whether or not the return will be enough to convince Paramount that TMNT 3 is still a viable project. It’s reasonable to expect that China will push Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows over the $200 million mark worldwide, but something tells me that this won’t be enough to cover costs of advertising, production and distribution.

If we’re being honest about this situation, there’s still a likelihood that Paramount will decide to move forward with TMNT 3. However, the next film might see a much lower budget than this one, and it will probably be a few more weeks before they announce anything. It’s currently a bit of a toss up, but with the Chinese release coming up this weekend, there’s still a chance that Out of the Shadows will make enough money from the box office to convince Paramount that they should continue with a sequel for the franchise.

None of this even gets into the area of merchandising. When you consider how much money Paramount is likely to make from their Out of the Shadows toy line, chances are that this profit could make enough of a difference to convince them to continue with their plans for TMNT 3. If we’re being honest, Out of the Shadows probably won’t end up being as successful as the first movie, but there is a chance that it could be successful enough to continue making Ninja Turtles movies. Don’t be too surprised if Paramount announces plans for another sequel at some point during the next few months.

What do you think? Should they make a sequel for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows? Should they let this film franchise die? Let us know your thoughts on a possible TMNT 3 in the comments or on facebook/twitter.

Wow…umm, number one, you are quite loyal to this movie and not to mention the actors, i’m sure they appreciate your support.

I really need them to make tmnt 3! I hate when franchises end with one sequel! It looks so stupid in history. And tmnt 2 left so many loose ends and good plot points for future movies!

you know what…? Yes, i seriously do belive they will make a part 3 sequal. We all do understand that there are the fans who are loayl to the 1990’s TMNT, however there are two things to consider; first, the tmnt 2014 version has a noteworthy interpretation on the tmnt. Second, there are fans that like this interpretation despite the ones who don’t. So, yeah keeping those fans in mind, i’d say there will be a part 3 to this franchise.

I have mixed feelings about a TMNT 3. On the one hand I want to say absolutely yes! I would love to see a third movie. However, I think the writing needs to be addressed. Bring in some new writers or something. Even though there were a few parts of the movie I felt were handled really well – like the mini-arcs for each of the brothers – the overall pacing of the movie and sequence of events could have been so much better. Also, I am concerned about what a lower budget might mean. If they can still make a quality product (or quality equal to 2014/2016 movies) then yes, but if the quality is going to be seriously lacking then no. I would love to see Ploszek, Ritchson, Howard, and Fisher come back. It would be great to see Brian Tee actually get to do more Shredder. I thought he was fantastic and wanted more. And Karai… she is such an interesting character, she deserves more than a couple of lines and lame fight. If they’re going to include a character at least do them justice. If they can’t do that, then just leave them out! Ok, rant done. That didn’t really answer the question. My answer is yes, and no. 🙂

Excactly! Finally! Thank you, you are the first person I have heard of to realize/agree that the problem isn’t so much the actors or production; but what the writers did. I think all the actors are perfect and I loved out of the shadows but hated how lame they wrote the Casey jones and Vern characters. Still, I’m holding out hope for a 3rd film and for some New Writers to come with it.

To the Old Gods and the New… I’m praying for the Chinese release. We need another movie to complete this new TMNT trilogy.

I new the other TMNT would suck which is the reason why I didn’t waste money to see it in the theater. When I did watch it, I was not impressed. I grew up following the turtles, so these new ones. I simply don’t have time for. The only thing that was good in the first movie was Megan Fox

Just please don’t reboot it. It’s too soon for a reboot.
