In the past few months, Platinum Games has given us our first few trailers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. The first trailer got everyone excited for the game, while the second revealed some fighting mechanics. The third trailer was unveiled earlier this week, bringing with it the official release date for the title along with some awesome footage of classic enemies from the franchise. Now, thanks to a demo revealed by IGN during an interview with one of the developers, we finally have our first full look at an actual Mutants in Manhattan gameplay video.
In this video, we get to see the turtles taking on groups of foot ninjas before finally meeting their first boss enemy in Bebop. Moving around the world appears to be both simple and fun, similar in style to something you might see in the Batman: Arkham series or even Assassin’s Creed. Actually, if I’m being honest, movement appears to be even easier in this game than it is in those popular titles, but it remains to be seen whether or not that is a bad thing. The fighting mechanics look a bit odd, but they also look incredibly fun – especially the first-person shuriken throwing.
In addition to the traditional fighting that we see between the turtles and the foot clan, there appear to be more than a few special moves used during the battle with Bebop. In particular, one move from Michelangelo was both awesome and hilarious, as he forces the enemy to dance. If you take a close look at this special attack, it would appear to be referencing something that we see in the opening credits for the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series (Hint: Michelangelo is a party dude). That’s right, they’re bringing back some classic TMNT goodness for Mutants in Manhattan!
After Mikey pulls off this move, we also see a few other special attacks, including one from Donatello which heals his fellow turtles. If you thought the game was looking a little too easy, just take a look at Bebop’s health bar, which has seven full bars of health. If this Mutants in Manhattan gameplay video is any indication, you can expect the game to be fairly difficult. After all, it would appear that Bebop is only one of the first big enemies that you fight, and he was clearly pretty tough to take down.
Something tells me that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan is going to find the right balance between frustration and fun. This element has been sorely lacking in a lot of recent TMNT games, and it would be nice to see a return of some tough beat ’em up action in this title. What do you think?
