New Details Revealed About TMNT: Out of the Shadows

by Justin Bozung

Now that the dust has settled after one of the most memorable and contentious E3 conferences of all time, it’s time to start talking about the games. Since we’re all about the turtles, obviously we’re going to talk about the ambitious new game from Activision, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Yes, I said this game has ambition. Why? Well, if what we’re hearing about the game is true, we can expect gameplay similar to what we’ve seen from games like Batman: Arkham Asylum. Considering the game has a reported price point of only $15, I’d say that’s a lot of bang for your buck!

After seeing some leaked footage of the game from E3 last week, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t just some quick cash in. The developers of this game have really gone all out to produce an excellent experience, featuring gameplay elements that you wouldn’t typically expect to find in a title at this price point. What kind of features can you expect?

Stealth Action

In the leaked video online, we got to see a bit of stealth action at play in the game. That’s right, just like in the Arkham games or even Metal Gear Solid, you’ll be expected to creep around and take enemies out quietly – an element which hasn’t really surfaced in many TMNT games in the past. If memory serves me right, I don’t recall ever seeing this type of gameplay in any previous Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game. It is a feature which at least appears to be exclusive to TMNT: Out of the Shadows.

Inventory Items and Special Abilities

In addition to stealth elements, you will also apparently be able to pick up items that will be placed in your inventory. This has been seen in previous games, but never quite to the same effect as it will be used in Out of the Shadows. Have you ever wanted to be able to save that pizza you found in the TMNT Arcade game for a later point in time? Well, now you can! Different items will perform different actions, helping you through the game when you need it. In addition, there will apparently be a special skills tree which will allow you to use experience gained to learn new moves or even upgrade weapons and armor. That definitely isn’t something you’d expect from just your average Ninja Turtle game!

Modern Street Brawling

The actual fighting action that we all know and love from more traditional Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games is back with a vengeance. It’s definitely very different from the kind of side scrolling beat-em up action that we’re all more familiar with from TMNT games, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun. The fighting elements of this game have been compared yet again with modern games like Arkham Asylum and Sleeping Dogs. The difficulty level is said to be accessible to all players, but favoring gamers who are more familiar with button combinations, which suggests that it will be an excellent game for all Ninja Turtles fans, both young and old.

Comic Panel Story

Calling back to the original source material, this game will feature cut scenes entirely made up of comic panels. The story will progress forward naturally, but between levels you can expect to see some awesome Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book action, which is definitely a plus in my book.

As you can see, it would appear that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows incorporates elements from throughout the entire span of Ninja Turtles history. Not only that, but it also attempts to bring in daring new elements that we’ve never before seen in a TMNT game. I don’t know about you, but I’m starting to get really excited about this game! Sure, the art style is a little strange, but the gameplay looks absolutely solid. With an original release date of June 26th, we’re supposedly only a week or two away from release. However, reports from E3 are indicating that they may have decided to push the game back in order to ensure that they produce the best possible quality of a game. You never can tell with these digital game releases, but nonetheless, you should keep your eyes peeled for this turtley awesome new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game to hit PSN, Xbox Live and PC very soon.

What do you guys think? More importantly, which gameplay features are you most excited about? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to check out the leaked footage for yourself!

It still needs to be released on a Nintendo platform, otherwise it’ll fail like the TMNT4 arcade game remake that was on XBL. Remember that? The original on arcades and the SNES were brilliant, but the remake on XBL/PSN was crap! This needs to come out on a Nintendo platform, no arguments! It NEEDS to be done!

Peter we totally agree with the Nintendo platform request. Nintendo markets games for younger generations which exactly the Ninja Turtles appeal to. Thanks for sharing dude!

As a huge fan of TMNT. I didnt like their look. I mean turtles have nose but TMNT doesnt. And they all look like street brutes which I hate. Still, it is TMNT game and I will buy it 🙂
