The Next TMNT DVD Will Include Four Episodes From Season 5

A few weeks ago, we reported that Nickelodeon had announced their latest DVD release for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At that time, the only information we had was the name of the TMNT DVD set and the number of episodes that would be on this release. Given their history with physical releases related to this series, we were left scratching our heads about the number of episodes announced for the Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder set. I proposed the idea that we might not even see the end of the fourth season on this set, but apparently I was very wrong about that assumption.

Just a few days ago, Nickelodeon unveiled the exact episodes that would be included on this TMNT DVD. In addition to starting the set off with The Super Shredder, they will also be including the first four episodes of the fifth season. This is definitely a surprise, and it actually indicates a bit of a change in how Nickelodeon handles physical releases. Traditionally, you could expect to wait several months before they would release the latest episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on DVD, but this set could potentially release the latest episodes only a few days after they air.

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Shredder is set for release on March 21st, 2017. That gives Nickelodeon 5 weeks to air the next 6 episodes of the series. Assuming they end the fourth season with a double-episode (which is common), they would still have to air the first four episodes of the fifth season over the course of the next four weeks to make sure that they all hit the small screen before this TMNT DVD set is released. Even if they manage to pull that off, this would still mark a significant change in operation, as it is almost unheard of for Nickelodeon to produce a physical release like this so close to the actual air date of the episodes included.

This revelation comes mere days after Viacom announced that they would be revamping their business strategy. At the time that they made this announcement, they expressed an interest in focusing at least some attention on how they approach both physical and digital releases. If this decision is a direct result of the proposed changes at Viacom, I think I speak for most fans when saying that this is definitely a positive sign. Here’s hoping that future TMNT DVD sets maintain this strategy, and hey – maybe we could even get some blu-ray season sets as well? Just saying!
