2013: A Turtley Awesome Year In Review

It’s been a pretty cool year for the Ninja Turtles. While 2012 brought us Nickelodeon’s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and revitalized the franchise for a new generation, 2013 brought us a lot of awesome new toys and discussions about the new movie coming out in 2014. Okay, so a lot of that talk was rather negative, but most of us have warmed up to the film since then.

The moment when Michael Bay came out and made that infamous declaration that the origin of the TMNT was going to be alien, we knew the fans were going to be upset. Of course, we had no idea how big of a deal it would be, but eventually it was revealed that the producer misspoke and the origin of our heroes in a half shell was safe. With that came the elation of many fans, but some are still unsure of what to expect from this movie. Sadly, the negative press that the film has received will probably still hurt it to some extent, because even now there are still fans who believe that the Turtles will be aliens in this new movie.

Thankfully, in addition to that news, we discovered the revelations of casting choices which were definitely interesting to say the least. While many were upset with the choice of Megan Fox as April O’Neil, her co-stars remain adamant that she is more than just a sex symbol in this latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. Other casting decisions revealed that the film will be focusing more on the story of the original animated series, bringing forth characters who originally got their start in the 1987 cartoon. Some fans have taken this as a welcome departure from the Ninja Turtles we saw in the original film franchise from the 1990s, but others remain unimpressed.

Regardless of all of the naysayers, it’s clear that over the course of this year, the TMNT film has gone from being every Shellhead’s worst nightmare to a project that we can all look forward to. Originally, there was also a concern that the title of the film would be shortened to just “Ninja Turtles,” but that has since been revealed to be false, as pictures from on the set show us that the full title for the movie is indeed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Needless to say, the year started out with a lot of controversy, but that has since died down and been replaced with cautious optimism.

In addition to all the movie news, we got a lot of great toys this year including Funko’s line of Pop Vinyl toys. Playmates also put out more than a few gems, including a bunch of new enemies and even a line of Battle Shells TMNT action figures which are based on the Storage Shell line from 1991. Some might say that they’re going back to the well a little bit too often, but to be honest, I couldn’t be happier to see some of my favorite childhood toys getting a new life thanks to Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.

With all that in mind, I’d say it’s been a pretty awesome year for the TMNT in 2013. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.

My name is Justin Wren and I love to write about the TMNT! I've been a big Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fan since the late 80's. Back then, I would watch the original animated series and play with the Playmates toys all the time. I have been following the boys ever since I was a kid, and I'm very happy to see them back in the limelight after all these years. Needless to say, I'm proud to be a member of the team on this awesome TMNT Fan Site!
