New TMNT Toys Reveal Details About Movie

by Justin W

Thanks to a fellow Shellhead, we’ve just received details about the latest set of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys set to hit the market in 2014. Unsurprisingly, the toys are directly related to the new movie set to be released on August 8th. Word is that the figures were unveiled at a toy fair recently and one of the fans reported back on some of the things they noticed about the TMNT toys.

Most importantly, this source confirms that each character has their well known colored bandanas and weapons. In addition, there is nothing alien about the turtles and they actually look “quite traditional.” For fans who were concerned that the design of the turtles would be drastically changed or that a possible alien heritage would change how they look, it would appear that you have nothing to fear.

That being said, some of the other revelations were fairly startling. Each of the Ninja Turtles is apparently sporting a different physique, with some featuring bigger muscles than others. The style of dress also appears to vary, as the TMNT are said to be wearing very different clothing. What this says about the role of their characters in the film is quite intriguing, but we probably won’t know more about that until the film (or maybe even a trailer) is released. Regardless, some of these descriptions are pretty interesting:

“Leonardo in a sort of pseudo samurai gear get up including shoulder armor, some leg bits, arm bracer and foot wear up to the calf with bindings showing. He might have some armor (non metal) along his chest as well. Donatello’s gear is a mix of techy, modern and a dash of samurai with more normal footwear (for a 2 toed giant turtle), some gadget on his head and gadgetry coming off of his shell. The ends of his mask are far longer than the rest, draping down to his waist. Raphael has adopted an urban warrior look with white, bandage-like wrappings on his feet, right leg, and right arm. He wears this very conan-esque loin cloth..thing..with leather straps draping down as if he were more suited for gladiatorial battle. Michelangelo’s outfit seems the simplest with a hoodie wrapped around his waist, pants and sneakers with the toes cut out, wrappings on his hands and forearms, a necklace (could be puka shell beads?) and his mask ends drape down to his chest. He looks frighteningly ready to spit out some modern catch phrases.”

Needless to say, these are some pretty well defined characteristics that hit at the heart of what each individual member of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is typically associated with. Of course, some might be a little concerned to hear that Raph has a loin cloth or that Mikey is wearing a hoodie, but you have to expect that they’re going to modernize these characters to a certain extent, just as they did with Nickelodeon’s new Ninja Turtles series. With that in mind, these descriptions of the new TMNT toys have me a little more cautiously optimistic for the film. Being that they are directly tied to Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, I’m sure we can expect to see them hitting store shelves a month or two in advance of the release.

This movie sounds awesome, it’s too bad all the haters are blinded by their hater hate for a guy who isn’t even directing it. You were all wrong about the alien thing (even though the mutagen is from space in the original comics)! The naysayers need to learn from their failures by shutting up and waiting to see it before judging, you just might be surprised had you not prematurely established a negative opinion.

Actually no, we were not wrong about the alien thing. Micheal Bay actually said it in multiple interviews about the movie and when the uproar started, he decided to change the direction for the film. While he isn’t directing it, he is producing it and has MASSIVE influence on the film. You are slightly correct about the mutagen being from space, it was actually another dimension, but who wants to argue semantics? The point is, Bay’s original direction was to have the actual turtles coming from another planet which would have destroyed the lore. The fact is everything Bay has touched has been an utter mess and so far, this is no exception.
