Comic Review: Shredder in Hell #3

The Shredder’s long road through the depths of hell reaches a fever pitch as he is forced to face echoes of his own soul! With lives on the line, who will survive the raging inferno?

After a hellish roller coaster that was Shredder in Hell #2, issue 3 slows things down (only a little though) to delve into the depths of Oroku Saki’s tormented soul. We’re more than halfway through this miniseries (issue 3 of 5) therefore we’re given some interesting and emotional progression within the Shredder’s wickedly insightful journey. If you’ve read my previous reviews, it should be clear that Santolouco is knocking this series out of the park in every conceivable way.

From an artistic standpoint, Santolouco continues being one of the best artists to work on a TMNT series as well as one of the finest artists in the current comic medium. With great perspective, colors, and linework in every single panel Shredder in Hell visually keeps you glued to what is happening with it’s swift yet graceful pace. Which is why the writing still needs to be praised.

We’re given some great story progression in the form of The Dragon, lost love, and a giant angry spaghetti monster. The Shredder has never been as relatable as he is here (for me anyway). You may disagree if you wear can openers everyday while whining at the rhinos at your local zoo, but throughout this series you’re truly rooting for this man even though you’re aware of all the distasteful evil he’s done.  

Which I guess is the point of this entire series: Retribution. And I truly look forward to what Shredder in Hell brings in its final two issues. If you’ve read the previous issues, there’s no doubt you’ll be reading this one. And if you’re not…and I mean this in the best way possible…let’s go to hell together.

Kevin Eastman Co-Producing New Movie

Kevin Eastman (co-creator of the TMNT) will be one of the Executive Producers for a new film, “REDCON-1”.

It looks like an awesome, crazy zombie movie! Super soldiers fighting zombies sounds pretty great to me! Here’s a breakdown from the press release.

About REDCON-1-

“Some years ago I wondered what would happen if zombies could retain some of their previous life skills…
What if they were combat based? And how would a small troop of soldiers survive being sent into the heart
of a seething mass of the undead, who don’t just bite… they fight back too.”

With that notion began Chee’s journey to realise REDCON-1 – a unique fusion of action, zombie horror and
war, with the added element of mixed martial arts, over 1,500 extras and a mass of military hardware.
Chee set out to film across the UK in the end covering over 12 cities and within those creating great
fanbases. “I wanted to build in a roots audience so that cinemas could be confident of people showing up
and by the same token ensure that the community we’ve built up could get their big screen experience and
indeed that we can meet them again!”

This inbuilt audience has already shown itself as Chee explained, “Reaction to the trailer has been incredible.
After a brace of top genre sites picked it up we put it out on our Redcon1Film Facebook page last Friday 10th
August and within 48 hours with no spend at all – so purely organic reach – we had over 50k views and added
another 1k likes to the page. It’s an amazing start and really is going to help motivate an enormous push to
the release.”

Before the vindication of this breaking reaction, Chee’s extensive planned activity brought 101 Films on
board as a distributor as Andy Lyon, Managing Director explained, “We’ve been following director Chee
Keong Cheung and taken an interest in his impressive action packed film REDCON-1 for some time now and
are really excited to be teaming up with Chee to help bring his epic passion project to UK audiences. With
the unique strategy planned for the film and the extensive outreach to different fan bases, it will certainly
make this title one to watch.”

I just know I saw a zombie doing Kung Fu and a soldier fighting him with nunchucks so I’m way in.

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie!

A new TMNT movie is on the way!

The Hollywood Reporter announced there is a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie in the works!

“Paramount is developing a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and has hired Andrew Dodge, the writer behind the Jason Bateman comedy Bad Words, to pen the script.

Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller will produce the feature via their Platinum Dunes banner. The company was behind the studio’s horror hit A Quiet Place.”

The movies from 2014 and 2016 were a bit of a disappointment to many fans. The first opened to a respectable $65.5 million. The sequel, Out of the Shadows, wasn’t a failure, but isn’t considered a success either. While Bebop and Rocksteady were used well, it suffered from many of the choices of its predecessor.

Andrew Dodge previously wrote Bad Words, which made the Hollywood Blacklist before becoming Jason Bateman’s directing debut. He has also penned the upcoming Space Jam 2.

While still produced by Michael Bay, this isn’t being considered a third movie, but more of a reboot. Details are a bit scarce at the moment, but we’ll keep you posted!

They may have topped all previous years exclusives. They’ve taken their, now very hard to find, 1/4th scale figures from the 1990 film and shrunk them down to 6.5″. On top of that, they showed off a gigantic display decked out in TMNT details that fits around 30 figures! They’re selling it as a bundle with the 4 TMNT figures to get you started.

NECA Dropping hints on World Turtle Day!

Happy World Turtle Day everyone!

There have been some great celebrations all over social media, but the most interesting comes from NECA’s official instagram account. They’ve been dropping hints all day, starting with this closeup posted yesterday on #TurtleTuesday.

Channel 3 WTRL. This is April’s news station in the 1990 movie. Sure looks like something April O’Neil could be in the works!

Then, they posted this one this morning.

Maybe it’s a new diorama to show off your figures? Maybe they’re just messing with everyone. That’s what I thought, at least. Until this photo was released.

At first glance, that’s a giant VHS tape. At second glance, I don’t think I see a VHS player.  I knew something else looked off, but thanks to Toyark, we can see the front of the box says “The Figures” instead of “The Movie.” You can also almost make out 2 of the figures on the side of the box. One looks like Donatello’s with his arm hanging out of the truck he and Casey work on, but it’s hard to tell.

These are likely to be 7 inch scale figures, and will probably be exclusive to SDCC or NYCC to not compete with the Playmates exclusive licensing deals. But by the looks of things, these will be a great collectors item for anyone able to get their hands on a set!
