Top 15 TMNT Toys of Toy Fair 2015

by Justin W

It’s only been a week since we last wrote about new Playmates toys hitting the market, and we’re already prepared to talk about many more Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys coming to market this year. What happened? The Toy Fair happened, of course! Every year at the New York Toy Fair, various toy companies roll out their latest and greatest inventions and show us what they’ve got planned for the year ahead.

This time around, the results were absolutely stellar and they are sure to please a lot of fans. Before we get started, we’d like to thank Toy News International for getting some of the first shots of these toys; thanks to them, we have some pictures to go with the descriptions! Without further adieu, let’s take a look at the fifteen most interesting Ninja Turtles toys from the 2015 Toy Fair!

15. Dream Beavers

That’s right, they’re going to be releasing the Dream Beavers in action figure format! Well, they’re going to release at least two of the Dream Beavers, but the other two will most likely depend on how the first set sells. These figures look pretty cool, even if they aren’t part of a complete set just yet. It’s nice to see that they’re getting a little deeper with their toy line and making even more of the characters we’ve seen in the show, but we’ll have even more proof of that as we go along in this list!

14. Transforming Leonardo Playset

Remember that four foot tall Michelangelo figure that Jakks Pacific made last year? Almost as if in answer to that, Playmates has decided to make their own large Ninja Turtle for the market – but there’s something pretty special about this one. Although it’s only half the size of the Michelangelo figure, this 24-inch tall Leonardo actually transforms into a play set. With a few simple moves, you can turn your Leo figure into a lair to play with your other TMNT toys.

13. New T-Machines

During the summer of 2014, a panel with the creators of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series revealed that there would be a new mutated Hot Rod Donatello character popping up in Season 3. At that time, they mentioned that they were trying to get it made into a toy; fast forward a few months and now we can actually see that toy in action! Alongside a bunch of other interesting vehicles, Donnie’s Hot Rod T-Machine looks great, and the entire series promises a bunch of fun.

12. Turtle Launcher

Coming from the T-Machines line, the turtle launcher gives fans a nifty little shell that will hold their new TMNT vehicles and launch them across any smooth surface with ease. The prototypes appear to work very well, and they look like a lot of fun. Each launcher appears to come with its own special T-Machine as an added bonus, which will give extra value to the fans.

11. Leonardo Audio Tuner Party Van

Although this is a part of the T-Machines line, it is much bigger than the rest and intended for a different kind of play. The Audio Tuner Party Van plays a series of catch phrases from Leonardo, and depending on how fast the van is actually going, the speed of the audio will either increase or decrease. While going backwards, the audio will play in reverse. Sure, it’s a somewhat silly concept, but it also seems like exactly the kind of toy that kids would love.

10. Transforming Ninja Turtle Weapons

First of all, transforming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are awesome. Second, it’s pretty cool that they can transform into the weapons used by each turtle. Perhaps the most effective of the prototypes on display here were Raphael’s Sai, as they legitimately looked like the weapon used by the character. While other examples were somewhat lacking in detail and there was not yet any Donatello figure in the line, it is cool to see that they are making transforming TMNT toys that can turn into something closely related to the franchise.

9. Hand-to-Hand Combat Turtles

In their deluxe series of toys, Playmates revealed a set of TMNT toys that have some pretty nifty action features. These figures not only repeat catch phrases from the show with every clank of the weapons, they also grunt and groan every time that their armor is hit. This makes for a very realistic play pattern that will put kids in the action with their favorite Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters. Even if we can make all of those noises by ourselves, it’s still cool to see a company putting that kind of thought into toy design!

8. The Slamboni Vehicle (With Unmasked Casey Jones)

Not only is this a vehicle especially designed for Casey Jones, but it also comes with something that the fans have been asking for: An unmasked figure of Casey Jones! Many people were unhappy that the only Casey Jones figure on the market was one with face paint on, but they’ll be happy to know that they can now get a regular version of the figure with this awesome vehicle set. Designed to look like a Zamboni with action features, this is the perfect way to show some love for Casey. Goongala!

7. Mini Mutant Shredder (Shrimpy Shredder)

Making his first appearance in one of the more recent episodes of the show, Mini Shredder quickly became an annoyance for the turtles. This figure will be part of a double pack that will include one of the bigger Shredder mutants created by Baxter Stockman. Personally, all I really want is this little dude, but it’s still cool to see that we’ll be getting some bang for our buck with this toy set. It was especially awesome to see that they had already made this toy after I had asked for it only last week! It’s like Playmates can read our minds or something.

6. Fugitoid

Although this character hasn’t appeared in the new series yet, it’s really cool to see a new Fugitoid action figure coming to market! Most of the fans probably weren’t even expecting this, and yet here it is. The concept for Fugitoid is pretty much as old as the turtles themselves, and he’s just as essential to the TMNT franchise as any other character, so it’s nice to see him make a return in the style of a new action figure. Welcome back, dude!

5. Mondo Gecko

Okay, so we all probably saw this coming, but now it is totally confirmed: Playmates is making a Mondo Gecko toy! Although he hasn’t quite made an appearance in the show just yet, he has appeared in the new intro for the show (as many fans were quick to notice), and it’s been long since confirmed that he will in fact be in the new series. The action figure looks pretty cool, and I’m sure fans will love having a brand new Mondo Gecko figure to play with!

4. Kraang Prime (With tiny Kraang Brains)

That’s right, they’re actually making a Kraang Prime toy! This is another figure that fans have been asking for. However, you might be surprised to discover that this isn’t quite like other action figures in the series, as it appears to be made of mostly rubber. Before you start complaining about cheap production, consider this: Kraang Prime will be coming with a lot of mini Kraang brain figures as well, and a gigantic plastic ball of Kraang brain is a lawsuit waiting to happen (what happens when a child throws a hard plastic ball at another child in a fit of rage? You don’t want to know). Trust me, with the extra Kraangs included, you will get more than enough value out of this Kraang Prime figure.

3. Dimension X (Savage) Mikey

This is another toy that a lot of fans have been asking for. In addition to producing a set of “Dimension X” Ninja Turtles, Playmates will also be releasing what they call “Savage Mikey,” which is a recreation of Michelangelo’s character after having been in Dimension X for quite a while. Fans of the series absolutely loved seeing Mikey in (oddly enough) is natural habitat, and now they can get their own version of Dimension X Mikey in action figure form!

2. Dr. Cluckingsworth

Can you believe it? Playmates actually has plans to release a Dr. Cluckingsworth figure! The slightly mutated chicken with a huge brain has quickly become a fan favorite, and now you’ll be able to get your very own figure of the mutant chicken. Currently, he is planned for release alongside three other small but notable characters, including Spike before he was mutated and one more character that we will be talking about next. Who could that figure be? Could it be…

1. Ice Cream Kitty

When we asked fans which TMNT toys they would like to see the most, one of the most popular choices of them all was Ice Cream Kitty. Well, guess what? They’ve already been working on it and the figure is planned for a release alongside Dr. Cluckingsworth and non-mutated Spike! I don’t know about you, but that might just be my most wanted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy set of them all. All of the other figures on this list are pretty cool, but none of them hold a candle to a set including two of the most funny and ridiculous characters of the new series.

Although they haven’t given the fans everything they’ve asked for  (Non-mutant Karai? Shredder Lair Playset?), it’s clear that Playmates is still pretty much on top of things when it comes to giving the fans what they want. There are more than a few items on this list that the fans were hoping to see, and that’s a pretty good sign of where we’re headed when it comes to the future of TMNT toys. What do you think? Love the savage Mikey! I’m definitely adding it to my list of TMNT toys I want.

We’re in four seasons and already there’s a Mondo Gecko roll-out but *no* regular Karai action figure? How many episodes has Mondo Gecko appeared in vs. Karai, who’s practically a main supporting character? Sorry to sound so grouchy about it but it’s bordering on ridiculous that she doesn’t have her own standard, non-mutated action figure.

I’m with you on that line of thought my friend. I was really hoping for human figures of Irma, Karai and Baxter but it seems that Playmates has no interest in pleasing the fans. 🙁

I don’t want to sound negative since you put on an awesome review but I have to say that though I love this toyline, it is really lacking from the true potential that it could have. While there have been some great figures, Playmates seems to be more concerned on making money with cheaper materials than dishing out what could be one of the most awesome toylines around. Why would I say this? Well just compare the old toys with the new ones and you will know what I mean. Let’s take Mutagen Man for example, the old figure looks so creepy and awesome with incredible details on it’s insides while the new figure seriously lacks in detail in every posible way. Slash is another example of this. I was so pumped when I saw Slash was gonna be on the show and I was really looking forward to having him as a figure. What did Playmates give us? A ridiculously tiny Slash that you can hardly even make out his face! Slash is larger than the turtles on the show but this tiny thing looks really awful standing next to the turtle figures! And what about the human figures? No Irma, Baxter or Karai??? Fans want these figures but Playmates just won’t deliver! And before Playmates even thinks about saying that human figures don’t sell well I will say that’s a cheap excuse comming from the very same toyline that gave us figures of Irma, Burns, Bernand and the normal humans from the TMNT 3 movie! They are even making a Ghengis Frog that looks like a barly articulate chunk of plastic when they could easily be making a second form Cockroach Terminator figure that would be more awesome! They don’t want to risk human figures not selling well? Then why not make a series of figure two packs? What fan wouldn’t buy a pack of figures that contained a correctly scaled Slash and Irma? Or how about one with Justin and human Baxter? Heck I would even love a two pack of the Creeper and the little girl that had tea with Leo instead of that lame Ghengis figure. And about the big chunk of rubber Kraang Prime? That’s really sad coming from the same company that gave us the humongous Krang Android Body figure! Ask the fans if they wouldn’t prefer a human Karai figure over the upcoming Pigeon Pete! As I said before, I’m sorry for being negative but I am a fan that grew up with the Turtles and I have a ton of the old Playmates line and I love them so much but I just hate the direction the Plamates is going with this line. I have my Scumbug figure right next to my bed and I look at him and think he looks so creepy and awesome that there is no way the new Cockroach Terminator figure will ever even compare to him! This line could be the best ever if Playmates gets their head in the game and returns to the old formula that gave then a very cool and very succesful toyline in the past. As the saying goes: If it’s not broke don’t fix it!
