Turtle Power World Premiere at Comikaze 2013

by Justin W

Over the course of the past six months, I’ve had more than a few friends ask me about the progress of the Turtle Power documentary which I reported on last year. Since the people behind the project are doing it more as a labor of love and taking their time to produce something really fantastic, it’s been a long while since we’ve heard much of anything about the film. Although there still isn’t any news on exactly when the movie will be released, we are finally starting to see some indications that the project may be near its completion.

Recently, at Stan Lee’s Comikaze, some of the biggest names in TMNT got together and appeared in a panel called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the Big Screen – World Premiere of TMNT Documentary. The members of the panel included Kevin Eastman (co-creator of the Ninja Turtles), Scott Mednick (one of the producers of the reboot), and Randall Lobb (director of the film Turtle Power). During the panel, the majority of the discussion was about the documentary which has been in the works for the past few years. We now know that the movie finally has a run time of 94 minutes and includes never before seen footage and interviews from throughout the history of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

If this is your first time hearing about the project, I suggest that you do yourself a favor and check out the Turtle Power website. These TMNT fans have gotten together with some of the biggest names in the Ninja Turtles universe and worked towards producing something truly special. Not only will the documentary feature footage which supposedly dates back to the origins of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it also brings together just about anyone and everyone who ever had anything to do with the success of the turtles, making it a must see for any die hard fan.

Being that I and my friends have been huge fans from the very beginning, we were all curious to know what had happened to this Turtle Power project. Thankfully, it would appear that we don’t have much longer to wait. A clip of the documentary was revealed during the panel, indicating that we might not be that far off from seeing this film released. Sadly, the documentary still doesn’t have the notoriety that it deserves, which could spell disaster for the project. With that in mind, I would ask all of the TMNT fans to get together and spread the word about this excellent film. With your help, we can make this project a success and ensure that this love letter to the fans is not forgotten or ignored.

Among other news revealed at the Comikaze panel was the concept that there may actually be an alternate cut of the original 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film in the works. As always, Kevin Eastman was showing plenty of support for Jonathan Liebesman’s TMNT reboot set to release in August of 2014. The general request was for fans to hold their opinions on the film until they actually saw it, but even if you don’t want to see that movie, one look at the trailer for Turtle Power should convince you that there will still be at least one TMNT movie worth checking out in the next year.
