Nickelodeon Hiring Animators For Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Whether you are yourself an animator or you just want to follow the progress of this show, chances are you’ll be happy to hear that Nickelodeon is currently in the process of hiring creative minds to work on Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. For those who aren’t aware, Rise is the planned 2D TMNT reboot which is currently scheduled to hit the air in 2018. The latest iteration of our heroes in a half shell will be co-executive produced by Andy Suriano & Ant Ward. Suriano is notable for working on such projects as Samurai Jack and Powerpuff Girls while Ward has been an active participant behind the scenes of Nick’s current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.

Earlier today, Animation Insider posted a job application from Nickelodeon indicating that they are currently looking for animators to work on the new TMNT reboot. If we’ve got any animators in the crowd, feel free to apply for this position and show Nick everything you’ve got to contribute! The role they are trying to fill is that of a Character Designer, which makes sense given some of the details that have been revealed about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. According to the initial press release, it seems like Viacom wants to introduce a lot of new characters in this series.

“From the tallest skyscraper to the dankest sewer drain, the Turtles will encounter absurd new mutants and battle bizarre creatures all while enjoying their favorite slice of pizza.”

If they have plans to create a lot of “absurd new mutants” and “bizarre creatures,” it only makes sense that they’ll need to hire on a new Character Designer for the show. Before anyone cries foul, just remember that the original animated series introduced a lot of the characters that we know and love today. There’s plenty of room in this franchise for even more awesome characters, and it’s definitely exciting to see Nickelodeon investing some real money into that.

One of the most interesting aspects of this job posting is something they mention under the Responsibilities section: “Ensure quality & style of show is achieved.” This definitely indicates that Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will have its own unique style, but we still don’t know exactly what it will look like. Some have speculated that Nick will be aiming for a Teen Titans Go approach, but other fans are hoping that Andy Suriano will bring us more of the style we saw from Samurai Jack. Whatever the case may be, it’s very exciting to see Nickelodeon hiring on new animators to make this awesome TMNT reboot.

Nickelodeon Reveals Tales of the TMNT Will Feature 7 Adventures

Have I mentioned how annoying it is when Nickelodeon fails to properly explain their plans for this franchise? Thanks to revelations from Playmates Toys, we discovered that Nick was going to re-brand the fifth season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. At that time, they revealed four different toy lines based on individual story archs from the fifth season of the series. The way they talked about these action figures, we were lead to believe these would be the only stories in Tales of the TMNT. Thanks to a new ad from Nickelodeon, we now know that there will be a total of seven adventures spread across the final season of this much beloved cartoon.

Although I’m sure many fans would prefer to see longer tales, it looks like we can expect an average of 3 episodes per story arch. To be fair, it would appear that they will indeed be touching on at least a few of our favorite adventures from throughout the history of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. One of these archs will feature the turtles as babies, which may finally explain one of Brandon Auman’s sometimes cryptic social media messages from over a year ago. It would appear that they’ve been working on this final season for quite some time, and that’s probably a good sign.

You can also expect the four tales we’ve already mentioned alongside two additional stories that haven’t been fully revealed. It’s always a good idea to have at least a few surprises in store, but it would have been nice if they had explained their plans for Tales of the TMNT a bit earlier. Given that the re-branding of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is scheduled to take place in less than a week, that doesn’t give the fans a lot of time to prepare for such a big change in format.

All Nick had to do was tell us that they’re changing the name of the show and it will feature seven different stories. We didn’t need to know about the characters involved or what the turtles would be doing – but it would have been nice if we knew that the series itself was undergoing a significant overhaul. This is the problem with Nickelodeon and Viacom: A lack of communication with their audience. Thanks to their problems with communicating, shellheads everywhere will only have a few days to prepare for an entirely different approach to their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon.

Tales of the TMNT looks like a lot of fun, but something tells me that the fans are going to be left with a slightly bitter taste in their mouth once the final season begins on March 19th. At least we’ve been appropriately prepared for the new 2D cartoon coming in 2018! Let’s hope that their communication about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proves to be much better than what we experienced here at the end of the 2k12 series.

Opinion: Lack of Communication is Hurting Nick’s TMNT

It’s been two months since our last TMNT cartoon review. Two months. In that time, we’ve covered the release of Out of the Shadows, several comic releases, brand new toys, figures, costumes, and many other subjects. We’ve had crossover events and blu-ray announcements. But in all of this Turtle awesomeness it feels like the one thing we haven’t gotten is a new episode of Nick’s TMNT. There’s not even a date for when it returns. The most I’ve seen so far is a post on the show’s official Facebook page from June 8th, showing the cast back in the studio recording. In that post is a reply stating new episodes will air in the fall, with previews to hit this summer.

I don’t want to start off on the wrong foot here (pun intended). I understand that it takes a lot to put together a tv show, especially an animated one. The creators have been really solid each season too, so I want them to take their time and put out the best product they can. This opinion isn’t about wanting new episodes right now, although that would be nice, rather it’s about the lack of communication companies like Nickelodeon have with their fans.

I don’t want to minimize the difficulty of Nickelodeon’s job either. Not everybody watches television the same way anymore. Some people have cable, some people DVR everything, and some people stream. I personally bought the season on Google Play and watch on my Chromecast or PC. It can’t be easy advertising to all of these venues. Even so, Nick’s website doesn’t have any information on when episodes will continue. I seek out information and the best I’ve found is the above mentioned Facebook post and a fan mentioned an Instagram account. The TMNT wiki doesn’t have any information. It feels like the collective internet is void of official information.

That is insanely frustrating. Not just as someone who writes reviews, but as a general fan. Our younger fans might not be familiar with this line, but TV used to follow the statement “same time, same channel.” For my parents, who watched the original Batman show in the 60s, it was “same bat time, same bat channel” and for me growing up with wrestling, it was “same warrior time, same warrior channel.” Shows rely on consistency. If I don’t know when a new episode is coming, what is supposed to keep me interested? The rumor right now is that new episodes will return in September. That will make it five months with no new episodes. They didn’t even take advantage of a new Turtle movie in theaters. What are they thinking?

This isn’t the first time Nick has done this either. They pulled similar shenanigans with The Legend of Korra, with unannounced breaks between episodes, a move from Sunday afternoons to Friday nights, and finally pulling the show from TV altogether and showing it online only.

Nick isn’t the only channel guilty either. Does anyone know when Steven Universe episodes will air? Cartoon Network holds episodes for what feels like a month, only to drop five episodes in five days, and then put it on hiatus again. Adventure Time has moved day and time slots so many times I lost count.

I’m also a big fan of The Flash and Arrow. I know exactly when those shows air. I know exactly when the midseason break is happening, itself a recent invention, and I know exactly when it ends. I’m eagerly looking forward to new episodes of each show, because I know when to expect them. Was “Earth’s Last Stand” a midseason finale? Was it a season finale? Does anyone know? When do I tune in again?

Apparently Nick is going to answer these questions soon. But with a market stacked with Ninja Turtles, and a less than stellar performance for Out of the Shadows at the box office, will anyone still care?

“Half-Shell Heroes” DVD to Hit Store Shelves Soon

For those who watched the “Half-Shell Heroes: Blast to the Past” special back in November, and enjoyed the new adventure that broke from the style of the current animated series, then some good news has hit the Internet. Starting March 15th, 2016, fans will be able to pick up their own copy of the 2D adventure on DVD.

Dealing with a malfunctioning experiment that sent the turtles back in time on a prehistoric adventure with ninja dino friends, “Half-Shell Heroes” was meant to introduce more fans to the brand new toy line being developed for a little bit younger demographic. However, using the same voice cast and the same personalities for all the characters in the special made the hour-long adventure feel like just another episode in the current series (and one that was arguably more fun and enjoyable than 85% of season three). The special will be released on a single disc, and will retail for around $15. Overall, “Half-Shell Heroes” was a fun ride for the turtles to take, and hopefully will not be the last time this particular art style and presentation of the heroes is on the small screen. With so much energy behind the franchise, and specials, movies, and TV episodes still expected to breathe life into the TMNT universe for at least a few more years, fans can only hope that this isn’t the last time the smaller versions of the heroes have their adventures.

New TMNT DVD Set Hits Stores

Continuing on with the release of the latest TMNT incarnation on DVD, the series adds Revenge to its list – and to collectors’ shelves. The set keeps the story going with the final 12 episodes of season three, and presents both final moments of Karai’s story, as well as some fun standalone adventures and the amazing, impactful finale that saw Earth blown to bits and sucked through a black hole.

 

The back half of season three saw many fan-favorite characters, like the Mighty Mutaniamals, as well as some familiar individuals return to the TMNT universe. Nowhere was this more prominent than in “Meet Mondo Gecko,” where the lovable lizard joined the newest incarnation while being voiced by TMNT alum (and perhaps the greatest Michelangelo of all time) Robbie Rist. Even if the third season wasn’t received with all the fanfare of the first two, the later episodes in season three were fun, and tried to get things back to the same level of cohesion that was seen early on in the show.

Like all the DVD sets released for the newest series, Revenge includes a high production value and plenty of episodes on its two discs. However, it still suffers from the same problems that have plagued the show as a whole since its inception: The releases are very limited, and the sets are so disjointed that buying every one to complete the collection almost doesn’t seem worth the cost. As mentioned prior, some DVD season sets do exist, but in order to get season two, fans have to buy season one all over again. Likewise, with a show that looks as beautiful on the small screen as this version of the turtles, it’s a little surprising that there has been no Blu-Ray release of any episodes.

 

While it’s nothing new that season three wasn’t met with the happiest of attitudes here, this DVD set is certainly worth picking up for any collector. It provides the fun of the series while still trying to put together a cohesive plot (even if the writers did essentially say, “You know what, forget it, let’s destroy everything” at the end of the season). However, it is still a shame that there is no season set, because fans that don’t appreciate buying two discs at a time are still waiting to get their hands on this show. Hopefully, someday that will happen, but in the meantime enjoy Revenge.
