Rad Review: TMNT Youtooz Collectables!

When it comes to collectables, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and vinyl figures are two categories that show no signs of slowing down. Good for us! Bad for our wallets! But if you find yourself tired of the redundant Funko stylings, there’s a fresh collectable company called Youtooz launched in 2019 that has something for everyone. Whether it be internet memes, South Park, video games, Spongebob Squarepants, The Peanuts, and so many more recognizable properties. 

But I know why you’re here…and that’s for TMNT. And, luckily, Youtooz has us shellheads covered with their line of limited edition vinyl TMNT figures! Youtooz’s TMNT vinyl figures are based off of the beloved 1987 animated series designs and feature our 4 Heroes in a Halfshell as well as that radical rat Master Splinter and the evil Shredder. 

Each vinyl figure stands a little over 4 inches tall and comes in its own unique (color coded) packaging. This, in turn, makes the figures look truly great displayed together in such an alluring colorful way. Upon receiving my TMNT Youtooz, I noticed the difference between them and the familiar Funko Pop! Brand. Though both are aimed at collectors, the Youtooz vinyl figures automatically come in a sturdy plastic case as well as a slick character specific slipcase littered with nice artwork and quotes. They’re not generic in any sense which makes every Youtooz vinyl figure feel unique, as each figure can stand on its own. Each purchase being a little “project” in and of itself. Which is refreshing in the sea of “collect them all!” marketing. 

Yet sometimes we need to free our figures of their protective shells (ha) to be displayed in their raw form. And, luckily, the Youtooz TMNT line look just as good out of the box as they do in them.

The figures are styled with larger heads with Youtooz signature “closed eyes” appearance sitting upon well sculpted detailed bodies. The paint applications are bold and vibrant and the vinyl figures have no problem standing on their own. The TMNT and Shredder are posed for action while Splinter is calm in solitude…as many great ninja masters are. Each Turtle showcases their individual personalities. The alluring colors reek of Saturday Morning cartoons and the figures would fit right in next to a big bowl of colorful sugary cereal. Fresh but nostalgic.  

The Youtooz TMNT vinyl figure line stands out amongst the vast selection of collector vinyl. From the alluring specific packaging to the figures themselves, the higher price tag is warranted when it comes to the quality of these figures. In and out of the box I was thoroughly impressed and happy to add them to my small-ish (yet impressive) TMNT collection. 

Being impressed by these little vinyl collectables just made us look to the future. We’d love to see Bebop and Rocksteady, a Foot Soldier, or April O’Neil. What other TMNT character would you want Youtooz to create for a future release? Comment Below!

Funko Announces NYCC 2017 Exclusive 8-Bit TMNT Pop Vinyls

Over the past few years, Funko has made a name for themselves with their Pop Vinyl line. These little figures have made it easy and fun for audiences of all ages to collect toys. The toy line may have started out innocently enough, but it has since grown to include characters from hundreds of different franchises and properties – including the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. After roughly a decade of success, Funko has decided to expand the Pop Vinyl name even further with a new 8-Bit design.

Needless to say, Funko could have chosen to start this branch of their most popular product with just about any brand, but they settled on none other than Shredder and the Foot Clan for their very first 8-Bit Pop Vinyls. Although Shredder will only be available in one color, the Foot Soldiers will be available in blue, purple, orange, white and yellow. Long time fans will recognize these colors and designs from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade Game and its sequel Turtles in Time.

These 8-Bit TMNT Pop Vinyls will make their debut at New York Comic-Con in October, and they will be very limited in number. As a matter of fact, there will only be 500 pieces available for each individual figure, which should make them fairly rare items in short order. That being said, something tells me that this is going to be a popular branch off of their toy line, so we might see a less limited version hit store shelves very soon.

Here’s hoping that these exclusives eventually reach the mass market. Until then, you can always work on your collection of TMNT Pop Vinyls! In addition to our heroes in a half shell, Funko has also produced figures of characters such as Baxter Stockman, Casey Jones and Leatherhead. Who knows? Maybe some of these names will also make an appearance in the new 8-Bit Pop Vinyl line!

COMIC REVIEW: TMNT Funko Universe #1

What happens when you combine the addictive cuteness of Funko POP! figurines with a nostalgic fondness for the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon? You get a freaking amazing comic that is tons of fun!

Comic Review: TMNT Funko Universe #1

If you like your comic stories to be grim and gritty, high stakes, or with emotionally complex narratives, TMNT Funko Universe #1 is not for you. However, if you have a soul and like fun, lighthearted stories that are truly for “all ages,” then this comic is worth picking up. Writer Caleb Goellner and artist Nico Pena’s one-shot immerses the reader into the world of 1980s and 1990s “Turtlemania” that is as enjoyable as it is self-referential.

First, a tip of the hat is due to Pena, who manages to create bright, expressive, and dynamic visuals while confined to using the likeness of figurines which – despite their popularity – are good for nothing other than sitting on a shelf. Another factor working in his favor is the uniform height of the Funko POP! figurines, which means there is no differentiation between the Turtles, Kraang, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Shredder. Despite these limitations, Pena breathes life into the pages that leans heavily on elements of action and physical comedy. Furthermore, the expressiveness he gives the faces – again despite the limitations of their designs – provides the reader with an emotional hook to connect with these characters.

What ties everything together is the Turtles themselves. Goellner nails their characterizations, from Mikey’s surfer-dude playfulness down to Raphael’s fourth-wall-breaking sarcasm. As for the story itself, it’s silly and low stakes, but it has a lot of heart thanks to Caleb Goellner’s writing. The plan devised by Kraang and Shredder is delightfully goofy. Though I’m not sure they still put physical prizes inside cereal boxes, the idea of using said prizes for mind-control is exactly what I’d expect from these classic cartoon villains. And when the incompetence of the Foot Soldier factory workers leads to a prizeless cereal box (and Mikey’s subsequent disappointment), the adventure begins.

It’s not just the silly story that’s enjoyable, but also the many meta-references that Goellner throws in for Turtle fans. Whether its a reference to the game Turtles in Time, a nod to Fred Wolf, or awareness of “getting dragged into a subplot,” there is a lot of fan service that does not distract from the main story. Though the price tag may be pushing it a bit (really IDW? $4.99? Have you learned nothing from Marvel’s recent struggles?), TMNT Funko Universe is a worthy addition to anyone’s comic collection. Sharply written and beautifully drawn, this is truly a comic for nearly everyone.

These Funko x Playmobil TMNT Figures Will Hit You Right in the Nostalgia

As children, it was fashionable for Millennials to play with toys that would probably be considered either choking hazards or unnecessarily violent by modern standards. Our early childhoods were likely to have been filled with Lite Brite and Playmobil figures, while our school years were likely filled with G.I. Joe action figures or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. One thing we could not have possibly imagined was combining elements from both of these eras into one fantastic collectible – and yet here we are. Funko has officially combined the design of Playmobil toys with a variety of different franchises, including the TMNT.

These Funko x Playmobil TMNT figures will be heading to both digital and physical store shelves in the next few months. Reports indicate that your local Funko dealer could start selling these as early as next week. One particular exclusive being sold by Entertainment Earth will be released in March. This exclusive is a black and white Raphael figure made to mimic the design from the original Mirage comics. The other Funko x Playmobil TMNT figures currently planned for release are Leonardo, Michelangelo and Shredder. There is no word yet on when we can expect Raphael and Donatello, but something tells me they will be joined by Master Splinter.

Don’t be surprised if you notice that these Funko x Playmobil TMNT figures look a bit larger than the Playmobil toys you played with as a child. Clocking in at 6″ in height, these action figures are roughly twice the size of the original Playmobil toys from your youth. Considering that these are designed for a nostalgic adult audience, that shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise. I don’t know how they do it, but Funko keeps managing to release creative and interesting collectibles that perfectly play off of our nostalgia. Expect a price tag of between $10-$15 per figure.
