I think we can all agree that the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film featured quite a lot of shell rocking action. Should we expect anything less from the turtles we know and love? Well, according to the actor who played Donatello, perhaps we should.
Recently, Jeremy Howard spoke with CBR about his role as Donny, and went into detail about his casting, experiences, and what he wanted to see in the sequel. When asked about his wishlist for TMNT 2, Howard had the following to say:
“We’ve heard they are going to bring new characters in, like Bebop and Rocksteady. I’d love to see more interaction with the Turtles, more quiet moments where we get to see how they think and what makes them tick. At the same time, I’d like to see more ninja artistry on screen. There’s a lot more skill we could see in the action sequences. Everybody has such a specific skill with their weapons. I don’t think we saw that come out as much as we had hoped with all the training we did. Again, it comes down to time and budget. I think we have the opportunity to slow things down and get specific with their skills and the way they think.”
To be honest, I think Jeremy is onto something here. If there’s anything we can all agree about when it comes to last year’s TMNT film, it’s the overabundance of action featured in the movie. As awesome as that was to see, we didn’t really get to see the character of the turtles fleshed out too much.
Sure, we’re all familiar with the traits of the Ninja Turtles, but it would have been nice to see more of that on film. One of the things that makes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so special is the relationship that they share with one another, and Jeremy Howard is absolutely right when he says that we need to see more of that.
Howard also touched on the fact that we didn’t get to see much of the turtles practicing their ninjutsu skills, which is also very true. Although there were a few scenes where the brothers interacted with their sensei and showed off some of their skills, they weren’t very long or elaborate. It would be nice to see them spend some more time in the dojo, preparing to face off against the foot clan and Shredder with the help of Splinter.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I have to admit that I entirely agree with Donny on this one. What do you think? Should the sequel slow down a bit and focus more on the relationship between the Ninja Turtles and their skills? Let us know your thoughts on this subject in the comments below!

I agree with him. As mentioned in the article, we really don’t see much of their fleshed-out personalities in the film. I really want to see more of what they’re like when they’re NOT kicking butt or arguing with each other.
The sequel needs a longer running time, 101 minutes isn’t long enough for character development, so yeah, The sequel needs to have those quieter moments, So we can know the Turtles a lot more.
Tiger Claw is a shit character. Try to describe him without mentioning what animal he is or how strong he is,you’ll end up trying to pass off how loud he talks as a character trait.like a fool.
and when the studio knows a movie is bad, they cut it down for more showings, especially with kids movies because they know the parent aka the ticket buyer just wants to go home. Runtime was the least of that movie’s problems.
I agree the movie needs to be longer the concept is their but alot of us are use to the movies we all grew up back in the day the way they interacted with each other how they acted more like Teenagers. like the other movies I think if this next one is kinda like the old ones it will be awesome.
Definitely Howard is spot on! More interaction between the brothers, more downtime with turtles, more inside jokes they have between them, more turtle screentime! Also would be nice to see them in April’s apartment. Can’t wait for TMNT 2
but we don’t want it to be too much based off of the 1991 movie maya
I was just watching the first film and appreciating the nice establishing shots and family moments you see, like the pork rind bit, splinter’s fathering of Raphael, and especially the turtle wax, truck repair, and bathtub scenes.
I agree 100% with Jeremy howard.. Like in the original turtles movie when the foot knocks Raphael out and you see Michelangelo Show off his skills with his nunchucks. Also, like when they were at the farm house. Be awsome to see similar sences to that…
I agree with Donnie too and would love to see some more storyline in the movie as well.
Dont get me wrong I like the action but you really need a good build up to it for it to make sense.
Gratuitous action without strong plot gets boring fast….. at least to me.
I am happy tmnt is still around and people are still diggin it.
Thats pretty cool when all is said and done.
I feel like the movie should have been more like the 2012 teenage mutant ninja turtle series. They should be in the layer more often and even have some of that comedy. I also think that it would be a better movie if the ninja turtles were more involved in it. Another thing is that Leo should probably be more leader like than the other turtles even if they don’t follow his every command. Maybe, just maybe they could make it so the ninja turtles have a little more comedy when they’re fighting the foot clan to lighten the mood. That’s a few things I would add to the movie. Other than that 1,000,000 stars!
I agree with that. We need more of the boys family time with each other, Master Splinter and April. Like the original first movie, the 2k3 or the current 2k12 series
I also agree with that as well. But you know what, that’s kind of what I have in my story. I wrote a script for the second one and really really really hoping the producer(s) will get it in time and love it and use it. If you like I can send a pdf. It’s about, “when a teenager’s father gets kidnapped by Krang and Shredder, the turtles must stop at nothing to help get him back or the evil plan progresses.” So let me know if you like the idea and if you want to read it. Thank you :)!
I think they should spend more time in the dojo, but they need to also spend more time kicking butt. they at least have to have a 2 or 3 hour movie for the next movie. But I still can’t wait for 2016,
i think donny is right and we can still have bebop and rockstedy in the second movie. just hqve the turtles have some family time and train in the dojo for like 65% in the movie then have the enemies get there butts kicked by the tirtles.
