A Nostalgic and Classy TMNT Box – January 2018

The first TMNT Box of 2018 is officially here, and it’s looking pretty darn good. Although this package contained a few familiar items, everything included was either nostalgic or stylish in some way. This time around, we have yet another exclusive TMNT t-shirt featuring original artwork, an additional TMNT collectible coin and a really nice TMNT pin. Say what you will about a potential lack of creativity, but I think January’s subscription box was definitely a winner.

This isn’t the first time the TMNT Box has sent us a Splinter t-shirt, but unlike the last shirt they sent, this one is much more elegant. The design of this TMNT t-shirt is very simplistic, but it’s also incredibly respectful of the character. After all, Master Splinter is a rather soft-spoken mentor who uses his staff only when necessary, and this artwork does a fantastic job of depicting that side of his nature.

RAPHAEL LAPEL PIN

If you’ve been paying attention to these reviews, chances are that you’re aware of the awesome Michelangelo pin that was shipped with the November 2017 TMNT Box. The collectible pin in question was based on artwork from the Mirage comics, and it would appear that they have decided to continue with this design concept. As you can see, January’s package came with a very similar Raphael pin. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be happier to see yet another TMNT pin based on the origins of our heroes in a half shell.

SPLINTER/SHREDDER COIN

These TMNT coins have become a very familiar sight over the past year, so it probably won’t surprise anyone to see them yet again in this package. That said, it’s worth noting that this TMNT coin includes Shredder — a character that originally appeared on the first collectible coin they created. At this point, it would appear that the TMNT Box has officially run out of ideas for these items. With all of that said, Splinter and Shredder work very well as different sides of the same coin, so it’s fair to say that this a pretty nice addition to the box.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Yes, it grows a little tiresome seeing yet another coin, pin, and t-shirt in the TMNT Box. Nonetheless, it must be said that the design concept behind each item in this package was very strong. I was very happy to see yet another TMNT pin based on the mirage comics, and I really enjoyed the simplistic Splinter t-shirt as well. While I remain hopeful that 2018 will bring some new ideas and interesting new collectibles to the table, I have to admit that this subscription box is still very much worth the price of only $9.99 a month.

An Eclectic Selection of Exclusive Collectibles – November 2017 TMNT Box Review

One look at the image above will likely surprise some of our readers. Needless to say, the limited edition t-shirt design on display here is one of the big ticket items included in this package. This artwork might be much louder than anything else we’ve seen from the subscription box thus far, but it’s also one of the most unique Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles products I have ever seen. In addition to the shirt, this box also contained a few smaller collectibles that just about any fan can enjoy. With that said, let’s take a look at the contents of this month’s TMNT Box!

SPLINTER T-SHIRT

This exclusive TMNT t-shirt design comes to us from artist Zachary B. Friedberg and the artwork is entitled “No Shredder, No Shoes, No Problem.” Although the colors and concept on display here may not be of interest to some fans, I can personally see myself wearing this with a hoodie or a Hawaiian shirt during the spring and summer months.

Perhaps November is an odd time of year to promote this kind of graphic tee, but it’s still an excellent piece of original art which you won’t find anywhere else. I’ve got two Splinter t-shirts now, and I have to say that this one might actually be my favorite.

 

RAPHAEL/ROCKSTEADY COLLECTIBLE COIN

As you can see, TMNT Box has decided to continue their work with these awesome collectible coins. This month brings us Raphael and Rocksteady, two of the most hot-headed characters in the entire franchise.

I could be wrong, but I believe this marks the final turtle in the series, which would mean that any further coins would have to feature different heroes and villains. Thankfully, there are still quite a few people and mutants in the turtle-verse to continue this series of coins for quite some time!

MIRAGE MICHELANGELO COLLECTIBLE PIN

In my humble opinion, this collectible pin might actually be the best item in the entire box. With artwork taken from the original Mirage comics, the Michelangelo pin included in November’s TMNT Box is sure to please pretty much any long time fan.

Personally, I’m hoping this is just the first of all four Mirage turtles in pin form! One thing is for sure – I am definitely wearing this pin to my next convention. Say what you will about the rest of this subscription box, but I don’t think anyone could come up with anything negative about this fantastic item.

 

FINAL THOUGHTS

Even though the Splinter t-shirt might not be every fan’s cup of tea, I doubt anyone will complain about that Michelangelo pin. While the graphic tee is worth anywhere from $10-$20, it’s fair to assume that both the pin and the coin would fetch around $5-$10 on the open market. That puts the value of this box at anywhere from $20-$40, which is pretty darn good for a $9.99 monthly subscription. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have much to complain about when it comes to November’s TMNT Box.

Heroes and Villains TMNT Box Review – July 2017

Another month has passed, which means it’s time for yet another TMNT Box review! I can’t say this is the most impressive box yet, but it definitely wasn’t a disappointment. Although past packages have been far more interesting, some of the items included this time around were still pretty cool. If there is a theme, it appears to focus on both our heroes in a half shell and their enemies. Whatever the case may be, let’s take a closer look at everything that was included in this subscription box!

Stylish TMNT Shirt

The TMNT Box usually includes a TMNT t-shirt of some kind, but I have to say that this might be one of my favorites. The design reminds me of the types of shirts that kids wore in the mid 90’s, with colorful stripes and a bit of an edge. Each stripe features one of the turtles, and they are appropriately represented. Although Leo and Raph are somewhat similar, you’ll note that Donnie is sporting a pair of goggles and Mikey is wearing sunglasses. If you ask me, this shirt made the entire package worthwhile.

Bebop and Rocksteady Stickers

Although I can confirm that these are high quality stickers, they are essentially the kind of item you could get from a vending machine. Both items are very soft and look quite nice, but they aren’t necessarily anything special. To be fair, the design of each sticker is pretty decent, and I’m sure that younger TMNT fans will love them. Unfortunately, even if these items are unique and only offered in the TMNT Box, they’re not exactly what I would describe as “valuable.” This would have been a nice addition to the package if there were something besides a t-shirt and a button to go along with it, but as the second notable item in the box, it’s somewhat forgettable.

Shredder Button

While past boxes have included high quality hand crafted pins, this TMNT Box features a rather plain and unimpressive button of Shredder from the 2k3 series. If there were some kind of background to go with the button, it might have been an interesting addition; instead, they chose to give us a bland and uninteresting picture of the villain with absolutely nothing to make him stand out. I can understand if they didn’t have enough money to add anything else to the package, but they could have at least chosen a different image for this item.

Final Thoughts

Despite a few unimpressive components, this TMNT Box was still pretty decent. I can honestly say that I would have paid at least $15 for the shirt alone, and everything else was worth at least $3-$5 more. That puts the value of this subscription box at around $20, which is still far more than the $10 monthly fee. Having said that, I really hope that this is the rare case where some of the items included were fairly unremarkable. From what I have heard, they have a lot of great things planned for the future, so I won’t judge them too harshly for this month’s box. Here’s hoping August brings something a little more interesting!

May 2017 TMNT Box Review

Another month has passed, so it’s time to talk about a new TMNT Box! This review will focus on the $9.99 subscription tier, revealing what you’ll find in the box when it arrives on your doorstep. Although the items on display this time aren’t necessarily as interesting, the value of merchandise still holds up fairly well. At the very least, it’s always nice to get an awesome new TMNT shirt each month!

Gorillaz TMNT Shirt

As you can see in the image above, the Ninja Turtles shirt is fairly unique. For those who haven’t picked up on the inspiration for this design, it’s worth noting that this is intended as a reference to the album cover of Gorillaz – Demon Days. The artwork was crafted by Cal Gee of the Pens & Pixels PopCast, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Even if you’re not a fan of Gorillaz, you have to admit that this interpretation of our heroes in a half shell is very stylish and well crafted.

TMNT Sweatbands

Although these aren’t really the most valuable items in the TMNT box, they are definitely nice. Featuring Raphael and Donatello from the original animated series, these sweatbands are fairly stylish and pretty high quality as well. As you can no doubt imagine, they stretch to fit around pretty much any size of wrist and they are quite comfortable. Heck, you’d probably look pretty good wearing these two sweatbands along with your new TMNT t-shirt!

Michelangelo Cut-out Figurine

When you’re done putting on the new wardrobe, you can check out the included postcard and cut-out your very own Michelangelo figurine! This is essentially TMNT paper craft, but the quality of the postcard is high enough that it’ll probably stand the test of time. This may be a relatively small addition to the TMNT box, but it’s still a fun little project. Besides which, if you complete the figurine and post a picture of it with #TMNTBOX, you can get entered to win a Mega Crate worth over $200!

Final thoughts

The value of this TMNT box definitely isn’t as high as we saw in April. That being said, it’s still worth the $9.99 a month. Although they claim the t-shirt is worth $25, I’d have to say it’s probably closer to the $15-$20 range. That being said, it was a nice shirt with a unique design that you won’t find anywhere else. The sweatbands are easily worth another $5, and the paper craft would probably run you $1-$2 for similarly designed products.

In total, the contents of this box are easily worth over $20. The items included might not appeal to everyone, but they are pretty darn awesome. I would have liked to see more items like the pin and coin we got last time, and I’ve heard rumors that they plan to continue with at least one of these collectibles in future boxes. This time around, the value was definitely there, but the merchandise wasn’t necessarily as awesome as it has been in the past. Regardless, if we can keep getting at least this amount of value out of the TMNT box, it will still be worth the fairly affordable cost of subscription.

A Look Inside the TMNT Box

It has been a few months since the TMNT Box first went into production, and several fans have been receiving all kinds of totally radical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles gear since its inception. What is the TMNT Box? Well, it’s a subscription box service much like Loot Crate and Nerd Block, but it features only Ninja Turtles merchandise. That’s right, it’s a box full of nothing but your favorite heroes in a half shell!

When I was asked to review the TMNT Box, I jumped at the opportunity. After all, who would say no to a box full of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles goodness? Now that I’ve opened the box, I can say that I’m definitely happy with the results. As I understand it, products can vary from box to box, unlike what you will find with similar subscription services. You’re pretty much guaranteed a cool TMNT shirt, but other than that, there’s no way of knowing exactly what will be in the box. With that in mind, let’s take a look inside!

tmntboxreview5As expected, we find the TMNT t-shirt on top. This Ninja Turtles shirt features Splinter meditating in his dojo, and it’s made to look like a t-shirt from a local gym. I don’t know about you, but I’d definitely join Splinter’s School of Ninjutsu if I had the chance! I’ve never had a shirt with neon pink artwork, and it honestly looks really cool. Of course, there’s more here than just a shirt, so let’s keep exploring.

Beneath the shirt, I found three more items of note. One of them is a Michelangelo Pez dispenser (my favorite turtle!). The other two are awesome vinyl toys of Rocksteady and a Foot Soldier. I didn’t have either of these figures yet, so they are welcome additions to my collection. The Foot Soldier is from the Pop Vinyl line, while Rocksteady is from the newer Dorbz line. It would have been nice to see some more actual turtle representation in the box, but all things considered, this is still quite an excellent haul.

When we look at the price of each individual item, it’s amazing that they managed to fit all of this into one box. The t-shirt alone is worth $15-20, while the vinyls are both worth about $10 a piece. There is at least $40 worth of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles merchandise in this $20 TMNT box! That’s a darn good value, if you ask me. From what I have seen in other unboxings, this is about the kind of value that you can expect. Considering that it’s actually hard to get your hands on some of these Ninja Turtles collectibles, I’d say that this subscription box is an excellent option for just about any fan.
