You don’t need me to tell you that Paramount has been releasing quite a few trailers and TV spots for their new film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Their ad blitz for this film has almost been over the top, so it’s clear that they want to own the summer box office. Thankfully, each of these new trailers typically features at least one or two notable additions that previous advertisements did not reveal. First off, let’s take a closer look at Casey Jones in action with this Out of the Shadows clip.
As you can see, this isn’t a trailer – it’s an actual clip from the movie. It would appear that this is the scene in which Casey Jones meets and defends April from Foot ninjas. While April tries to dissuade the ninjas by reminding them about who her friends are, it’s actually Casey that shows up first to protect her. After the battle, she asks who this masked vigilante is, resulting in the kind of corny humor that made the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles what it was back in the day. As a fan, I couldn’t be happier to see that kind of humor in this Out of the Shadows clip, because it brings me back to the heyday of the franchise.
Now, before anyone complains, I would like to remind you of a scene that actually takes place in the third issue of the original comic series: When the turtles ask for April’s help, she shows up in her van and drives them off toward her apartment. Unfortunately, the cops mistake her van for one that was used during a bank robbery and a chase commences. They end up leading the cops through a park and all over the place in an attempt to escape them, resulting in a car chase that will literally have the Blues Brothers theme playing in your head. Yes, even the original comics were that cheesy, so there’s no need to get upset about the corny sense of humor on display in this Out of the Shadows clip.
Now then, let’s talk about perhaps the most interesting and unsung reveal they have made thus far during the current ad blitz: the appearance of Krang outside of his armor for the first time. That’s right, in this latest Out of the Shadows TV spot, we actually get to see the Utrom leader’s disgusting body as he fights the turtles. Unfortunately, it’s really a “blink and you’ll miss it” appearance, but at least now we know what Krang actually looks like in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. In years past, TMNT fans would fantasize about how cool it would be if they somehow implemented Krang into the movies; now that fantasy has become a reality. I don’t know about you, but I think the evil little bugger looks pretty awesome! Now we just have to wonder about how he sounds.
