TMNT Comic Book App Launches

No matter where your fandom lies when it comes to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, you’ve got to respect the source material. This is an issue which has become even more pronounced for the turtles, as fans have recently cried foul to certain changes proposed for the upcoming film produced by Michael Bay. With that in mind, it’s more important than ever to familiarize yourself with the origins of these four heroes. What better way than with a new app for iOS devices? That’s right, now you can get your TMNT fix through your iPad! Ninja Turtles? There’s an app for that.

 

IDW, the comic publishers behind the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series, has teamed up with Nickelodeon to launch this application. However, despite being made possible by two companies who are relatively new to the franchise, it would appear that they are paying due respect. Not only will this app feature the latest comics in the series, it will also include every other TMNT comic ever produced. Yep, even those beloved original black and white classics can be found here! Current series writer Tom Waltz had the following to say about this new digital approach:

 

“From day one, TMNT‘s comic book re-launch has been met with outstanding support and excitement from fans of all ages and we at IDW couldn’t be happier. This is definitely a much-beloved property that has evolved in so many fun and interesting ways over the years, in so many different media markets, and the leap to digital just seems another fitting step in that ongoing evolution.”

 

Well said, Tom. The new app will be made available for iOS via comiXology technology, and the digital comics are also being released for Android and other devices such as the Kindle Fire.

Vanilla Ice Involved With New Ninja Turtles Movie?

When Michael Bay tells you to chill, it’s kind of insulting. However, when Vanilla Ice tells you to chill, you’ve got to at least hear him out. After all, the guy is a self professed shell head who is totally down with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In an impromptu interview with MTV, Ice was caught discussing the new TMNT film being produced by Michael Bay. When asked if he would have any involvement musically or otherwise, he pointed to the interviewer and declared that he couldn’t say anything about that. Okay, so this could mean nothing, but it could also mean a lot.

Vanilla Ice TMNT, Ninja Turtles

For turtles fans, Vanilla Ice will always be somewhat fondly remembered for the iconic ‘Ninja Rap’ that he contributed to the second feature film, Secret of the Ooze. During the interview, he was asked if he would ever do a remix or reprise his role again for the next generation of Ninja Turtles; his answer was an emphatic yes, as he stated the following:

“Absolutely. I’d get a tattoo of it. I’d be all over that. Aliens, sewers, whatever: They’re still Ninja Turtles, and I’m a ninja, so I get in where I fit in.”

I don’t know about you guys, but I think it would be pretty interesting to find out that Vanilla Ice was at long last involved with another TMNT project. When pressed on the subject, Ice pulled up his pant leg to reveal that he has a tattoo of the ninja turtles on his leg. When an actual fan comes out and says he’s excited about the new Ninja Turtles movie, it’s a little easier to handle the changes, particularly when that fan is the author of the Ninja Rap and hints at further involvement with the turtles universe.

TMNT Season 10 Coming to DVD This Summer

Yes, after 8 long years and several strange choices that lead to mass confusion, the 10th and final season of the originalTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series is finally headed to DVD. Season 10 is set to hit shelves on August 14th, featuring all 8 episodes on one disc. In addition, the set will include interviews with some of the animators behind the magic. Lionsgate had the following to say about this release:

 

Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo are back in the classic final season that pits turtles from the past and present against the evil Lord Dregg and his minions. Determined to enslave mankind, Dregg will stop at nothing to win: causing a piece of the sun to crash into Earth, opening a giant portal to pull the planet into Dimension X, and even draining the life energy from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Carter soon realizes that the only way to defeat Dregg, Krang and Shredder is to bring the Turtles’ past selves to the present…doubling the Turtle power! But will they make it in time before Dregg’s invasion is complete? Featuring time-warping serious Turtle muscle, season 10 is a totally tubular finale!

 

At an MSRP of $14.98, completing your collection probably isn’t going to hit your wallet too hard. However, completing your collection won’t necessarily mean that you’ve completed the series. Although this is the last and final season of TMNT, previous releases left out important and beloved episodes that still have not found their way to DVD. But, it has been confirmed that the two missing episodes from the original series of TMNT will be included as extras on the Season 10 DVD set. Fans will find it really nice to finally have the completed series on DVD and ready to watch whenever we want!

Top 5 Songs From TMNT Games

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exploded on the scene in the mid 80’s, making them a prime target for video game developers. It should come as no surprise to anyone, then, that some of the greatest games of that era feature these beloved turtles! What made the games so great? Well, great gameplay, stories that follow closely to those in the television show, and even the music. Yep, some of the most memorable and catchy music to come out of the early days of video games was found in TMNT games. Today we’re going to take a look at the best of the best, the kind of music that just never leaves your head and stays with you for your whole life.

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3: Manhattan Project (NES) – Super Shredder Battle

What better way to start off the list than with a song most of you probably aren’t expecting? Manhattan Project wasn’t one of the more popular TMNT titles of its time, but that doesn’t mean it didn’t have some kickin’ tunes. When you finally face off against Super Shredder, you’ll find this tune pumping you up. You know those games where you spend all day trying to get to the final boss only to find an uninspired boss with an uninteresting theme? That’s not the case here, as this song will really get you going!

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) – Intro

Yes, when this song started up, nobody knew quite what to expect. After all, it isn’t exactly the TMNT theme we all know and love. In fact, this intro song has more in common with Queen’s Stone Cold Crazy than it does with the turtles. That being said, it was still a catchy tune that got you more than pumped for the game. Okay, so maybe it didn’t turn out to be the best game ever, but at least the music was memorable, right?

3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 4: Turtles in Time (SNES) – Big Apple, 3 A.M.

Ahh, there’s the theme song we all know and love, and it’s been spiced up as well! When you start off this fan favorite, you’re greeted with an extra special version of the original TMNT theme song as you fight your way through the foot clan on the bridge. I’m sure we all have fond memories of this game, and its opening level, with it’s kickin’ rendition of the theme song, is one of the biggest reasons that so many shell-heads love Turtles in Time.

2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) – Underworld Theme

Yes, yet another tune from one of the most reviled TMNT games of all time. Hey, I can’t help it if the only real good thing about that game was the catchy music. No, it wasn’t influenced by the original theme, but just try listening to this song without it getting stuck in your head. There are plenty of other fantastic tunes to be found in this game, but it wouldn’t exactly be fair to fill this list with songs from just one game, would it?

1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Arcade Game (Arcade) – City Streets

But of course, how could I leave out everyone’s favorite game? How many quarters did we all pump into this game during the early 90’s? I’d wager quite a few! There was plenty of fantastic music to be found in this game, and a lot of it was based on the original theme song. Still, for my money, City Streets was the best rendition in any TMNT game ever made.

First Ever TMNT Drawing Sells for $71,700

TMNT DrawingHow much would you pay for an authentic piece of turtles history? Would you pay over $50,000? Because that was the starting bid at Heritage Auctions for the first drawing ever made of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The humble beginnings of these shelled heroes is a matter of geek folklore which still inspires and amazes to this day. So how did this drawing officially come about? Well, co-creator Kevin Eastman himself had a few words to say on that subject matter:

“Late in November 1983, Peter Laird and I were sharing a studio (our living room) in Dover, New Hampshire. One work night, in an effort to make Peter laugh, I drew a sketch of this character I called a “Ninja Turtle” and threw it onto Peter’s desk. He did laugh, and did a version of his own — to which I needed to take it one step further, and did a pencil sketch of four different Turtles, each holding a different weapon — and gave it to Peter, who wanted to ink it in — and when he did, he added “Teenage Mutant” to the “Ninja Turtle” part of the logo, and we both fell off our chairs!”

Who knew that a little joke could go so far? The unintentional beginnings of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles eventually developed into the huge success that we see today, with a whole new cartoon series and movie in the works for the near future. Who knew that roughly 30 years after they first got together and had a little fun, the product of that goofing around would become such a huge phenomenon?

The artwork eventually sold for $71,700 to an anonymous internet bidder. For just one small piece of turtles history, that’s pretty radical! Even more awesome is that all proceeds will be going to The Hero Initiative, which is an organization that helps comic creators without benefits and in need of support for medical bills, rent, and other such necessities. Isn’t it nice to see artists like Eastman doing their part to support other artists in the industry?
