Top 5 Moments from NYCC 2014 TMNT Panel

by Justin W

Over the past weekend, the New York Comic Convention took the geek world by storm, and fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles definitely weren’t left out of the loop. In fact, there was a really cool panel featuring some of the more notable voice actors and creators of the new Nickelodeon TMNT show, and it was a truly entertaining and informative experience. Not only did they reveal more characters that are going to be appearing in the show, but they also gave us a taste of what life is like behind the scenes.

The camaraderie that these guys share is truly something special, and it shouldn’t be too surprising that they do their jobs so well when you see how they interact with each other behind the scenes. For instance, even though Seth Green is a relatively new member of the cast (taking over for Jason Biggs as Leonardo), during this panel he was seen playing around with Greg Cipes (Michelangelo) almost like he was a brother. It’s really great to see so many talented people working together on something so awesome, and I’m sure that I’m not the only fan who can’t wait to see everything that Season 3 holds in store.

With all of this in mind, let’s take a look at the most interesting moments and revelations that took place during the NYCC 2014 TMNT Panel!

5.Greg Cipes Wants Sean Astin to be President of the United States

During one of the more humorous moments of the panel, the group were talking about how Sean Astin (voice of Raphael) couldn’t make it to the panel because he was too busy being an awesome father. While everyone was expressing how great of a guy Astin is, Greg Cipes spoke up and said “He’s the next President of the United States, that’s what I say! Sean Astin for President! Yeah!” This then prompted Seth Green to respond by chanting “Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!” Needless to say, it was pretty funny and very heartwarming to see how much these guys love each other. Maybe it was just a joke, but it was still one of my favorite moments from this panel. That being said, let’s get into the really good stuff.

4. Renet Will Be Making an Appearance In The Show

That’s right, a fan favorite of the Mirage comics who appeared last in the 2003 series will be making a return to television. It was hinted that she would be making an appearance during Season 3, but all that they could really say was that it will be “soon.” Renet is a Timestress and an ally of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and she will apparently be a love interest for Michelangelo. This series just keeps getting more and more awesome, and the inclusion of Renet and her story is definitely nice to hear about.

3.Before Returning to New York, The Turtles Will Change Their Look

While showing off some of the concept art for a future episode, Ciro Nieli explained that the turtles would be donning slightly new appearances as they prepared to re-enter the world they had to flee. In the concept art, it is explained that the TMNT are going to be going on a vision quest where they must forge new weapons and confront their deepest fears. Not only does this sound awesome, but the actual costumes designed for the Ninja Turtles here are absolutely amazing, and I honestly want to see these made into toys. In another interview with IGN, Nieli stated that they wouldn’t be in the woods for too long, so I have to assume that this means we might see this episode very soon. If you’re like me, then you can’t wait to see this episode.

2.In An Upcoming Episode, Donatello Will Become a Car

Wait, what? Yep, it turns out that Nieli also wanted to do an episode inspired by the 60’s drag racing phenomenon in American Pop Culture. As a result, we will be getting an episode where Donatello is apparently transformed into a race car. It’s important to point out that this will not be a result of a mutation, but rather Donnie will be possessed by an as of yet undetermined  “evil force.” At first, this seemed a little silly and out of place for the series, but then they showed a 3D model of what it would look like. Not only does this “Speed Demon” Donatello character look awesome, but the guys on the panel also stated that this would probably be made into a toy as well. It looks like an awesome toy, so it would be a shame if they didn’t!

1. Live Storyboard Animation of the Creation of Bebop and Rocksteady

That’s right, last but not least, the most awesome moment of the panel was when they showed off a clip of the upcoming episode where Bebop and Rocksteady are created by Shredder, one after the other. Although the animation wasn’t complete, they matched the audio with an animated storyboard and gave the fans a sneak peek at these long awaited transformations. This is a far different creation story than fans of the 87 series would remember, but it is also much more interesting. It’s clear that Shredder’s alliance with the Kraang has paid off, because he now has the power to decide which animals people will be mutated into. Although I’m sure we all feel bad for these two poor saps who have now become warriors for The Shredder, it’s also nice to finally see them in the show.
