Toys R Us Reveals TMNT Exclusives For SDCC 2016

There are hundreds of comic conventions held all over the country, but only one has the prestige of being colloquially referred to as Comic-con: SDCC! Every year, the geek world lights up for an entire week with all kinds of awesome news about comic books, movies and toys. San Diego Comic-con also brings the promise of exclusive collectibles, and this year’s convention will definitely continue that tradition. As a matter of fact, Toys R Us has already announced plans for their TMNT exclusives, and they’re all looking pretty darn awesome!

Two of these TMNT exclusives will be Mega Bloks sets based on the original Mirage comics. If you’re familiar with the early days of the franchise, one look at these sets will make you nostalgic for the good old days. The first set is based on the first meeting with Casey Jones and is set in Kirby O’Neil’s Second Time Around Shop. The second set has Leo facing off against Shredder amid the sign for Chet’s Toys. Combined, both sets will take you back to some of the earliest issues of the comics.

Although Toys R Us has already begun to sell the individual Mega Bloks TMNT figures in some stores, we haven’t yet seen these sets on store shelves. Speaking of which, both of these sets are also planned for release later this year in Toys R Us stores all over the country. A lot of people have been enjoying the Ninja Turtles Mega Bloks figures, so chances are that these will be quite popular. There have been a lot of TMNT toys based on the original comic books from Mirage Studios, but these might actually be the most authentic recreations we’ve ever seen.

As if these two Mega Bloks TMNT exclusives weren’t awesome enough, Toys R Us also has plans to release two awesome Kid Robot vinyls of Shredder and a Triceraton. The Shredder vinyl will have a green paint job, while the Triceraton will have a somewhat normal design. Much like the Mega Bloks, these exclusive collectibles will be available elsewhere. I know what you’re thinking: what makes these so darn exclusive if they’re going to be widely available? Well, that’s what a lot of geeks have been wondering about these SDCC “exclusives” over the past few years. That being said, these are some pretty awesome Ninja Turtles collectibles that fans will definitely enjoy.

Six Celebrity Voice Actors Confirmed For TMNT Season 4

San Diego Comic-con has already revealed some fairly awesome news about our heroes in a half shell, but Nickelodeon’s press conference about the latest season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles offered even more bombshells to the fans. Last year, shellheads went nuts when they confirmed that fan favorite characters like Mondo Gecko would find their way into Season 3. This year, they have upped the ante by dropping a few names with their new list of characters for TMNT Season 4. The first name in particular is a big one, and it is attached to a character that die hard TMNT fans have been hoping to see for quite some time.

The Fugitoid

 

David Tennant is going to guest star as The Fugitoid. You read that correctly: Tennant, best known for his role as the Doctor on the hit television show Doctor Who, will be providing the voice for the much beloved character from another dimension. Considering that one of his most beloved roles was that of a time lord who traveled throughout time and space, this is a rather fitting role for the actor. After all, The Fugitoid is a scientist trapped inside the body of an android from another world; I think it’s safe to say that David will be able to handle the concept of the character quite well.

Lord Dregg

 

In addition to this fabulous pairing, Nickelodeon has also confirmed that Peter Stormare will be playing Lord Dregg, yet another character that long time fans will remember. In the later seasons of the original animated series, Dregg served as the main villain of the Ninja Turtles. Lord Dregg is yet another baddie from outer space who is hell bent on taking over the planet, so chances are that things will get pretty hairy for the turtles during the fourth season. Peter Stormare has starred in a long list of notable films including Fargo, The Big Lebowski and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. You might not recognize his name, but if you look him up on IMDB, chances are that you’ll recognize him. Stormare has done a lot of acting in his day, and there’s no doubt he can handle the role of Lord Dregg.

Captain Mozar

 

As if the addition of these two important characters and their notable voice actors weren’t enough, it was also announced that Michael Dorn would be playing the role of Captain Mozar, the Supereme Commander of the Triceraton fleet. Yes, the Triceratons are officially going to be in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You might want to take a second to catch your breath here, because this now makes three fairly significant additions to TMNT Season 4 – The Fugitoid, Lord Dregg and the Triceratons. If the name of the actor portraying Captain Mozar doesn’t sound familiar, you may want to check your geek cred. Dorn is best known for playing Worf, an important Klingon in Star Trek: The Next Generation. He has since made a pretty nice career for himself acting in dozens of other television series and films. Needless to say, he can handle the role of Mozar.

Zog

 

Speaking of the Triceraton, Lance Henriksen has signed on to provide the voice of Zog, a scout for the Triceraton Army. Henriksen is yet another actor who has been in pretty much everything. From Aliens to Terminator and back, this guy has awesome in his blood. Honestly, I think I might be more excited about this announcement than I am about Michael Dorn as Captain Mozar. Lance is an incredibly under-appreciated actor, and I can’t wait to see what he does with the role of Zog. But wait, there’s more!

Armaggon

 

Ron Perlman is yet another name that geeks will be familiar with, and he is apparently on board for the role of Armaggon, a robotic bounty hunter shark. Yeah, I couldn’t make that sound more awesome if I tried. Armaggon first appeared in the Archie comics, and now he’s going to make a return for season four of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Boy, they really are bringing in anything and everything they can think of from throughout the entirety of the TMNT franchise! For those who aren’t in the know about Perlman, there’s only one name you need to read in order to explain everything: Hellboy. Hellboy is playing Armaggon. COWABUNGA!

Mona Lisa

 

To finish it all off (as if you aren’t already spent), it was also announced that Zelda Williams would take on the role of Mona Lisa. Fans of the original animated series will remember her as an amphibian friend of the turtles, although it isn’t clear what her origins or purpose will be in Nickelodeon’s TMNT. If the sketches are any indication, she could be an alien in this iteration of the story. Originally, she was a human who mutated into a lizard creature, but there’s no guarantee that they will stick with this concept. Zelda is known for her role as Kuvira in The Legend of Korra, another excellent animated series from Nickelodeon based on the Avatar: The Last Airbender franchise. I think it’s safe to say she’s got what it takes to portray this fan favorite!

Phew! All told, that makes six celebrity voice actors who have signed on to voice some fairly significant characters in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise. TMNT Showcase – The Triceratons

Aliens abound in the TMNT universe, from the good and friendly to the evil and just plain mean.  But some species walk a fine line, being allies to the turtles one minute, and their sworn enemies the next.  No alien race has taken on this role more in the franchise’s history than the Triceratons.

 

Resembling walking, talking triceratops dinosaurs, the Triceratons breathe a mixture of nitrogen and sulfur, forcing them to wear protective masks when not in their native atmosphere.  They are completely herbivorous, and value loyalty amongst their people above all else.  Having destroyed their own home world years ago as a result of the species’ powerfully aggressive nature, the Triceratons now live mainly on asteroid cities that they can maneuver through space to help them conquer new worlds and expand their empire.  These cities have become as sufficient for habitation as an actual planet, with factories, sports arenas, and even universities available for the inhabitants.

 

The Triceratons owe their success in large part to the mindset they’ve adopted as they conquered the galaxy.  The saurian species long ago decided that the most effective way to grow, evolve, and continue conquering was to embrace and adapt the technology and scientific discoveries of the planets they destroyed.  Most notably was the ability of atmospheric adaptability.  Through this, the Triceratons are able to mutate their own physical chemistries to make it possible to breathe any atmosphere, even if it would otherwise be toxic.  Additionally, the Triceratons have adopted the use of a highly dangerous stimulant called Xemorene, which gives them incredible speed and brain function.  However, the drug is completely addictive, so using it even once creates the possibility of withdrawal that can end in death.

 

The Triceratons have appeared countless times in the various incarnations of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  During the Mirage comics era, the turtles were transported to Triceraton space, and three of the aliens were transported back to Earth.  The saurian of note was Zog, who lived in the sewers until Raphael found him.  The others were responsible for stopping a Triceraton invasion in the Nevada desert, saving the Earth from total obliteration by one of the alien’s asteroid cities.  After Zog left the sewers, the turtles were confronted by Captain Zak’s Triceraton commando force, which nearly resulted in the total conquest of Earth.  However, thanks to the help of Leatherhead, the turtles were able to repel the commandos completely.

In their completely villainous role in the 1987 animated series, the Triceraton force under the command of Captain Zorax came to conquer Earth.  In the 2003 series, the Triceraton Republic went back to its roots, traveling from planet to planet under the rule of Prime Leader Zanramon.  They sent captured peoples to the stadium to fight in gladiatorial games.  Once Zanramon was eliminated as ruler, the Republic adopted an honorable legislature, returning the species to the way it was before Zanramon’s reign.  The turtles came across the Triceratons in this series when they chased the Fugitoid Professor Honeycutt to Earth, where they tried to invade, but were repelled and captured the turtles for their battle games.

 

Of all the aliens, allies, and enemies that have appeared and reappeared throughout the TMNT incarnations, the Triceratons have been an unavoidable staple.  Since they were actually designed before the turtles themselves existed, it’s only right that they become a part of the franchise’s lore.  Whether noble, destructive, dangerous, or honorable, the Triceratons have left a trail of destruction in their path, and Earth has always been a target they’ve been unable to take.  As long as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stand in their way, that will always remain the case, leaving the saurian species with one less world in their ever-expanding territory.
