New Kickstarter Planned for Munchkin TMNT Card Game

The last time IDW Games decided to use Kickstarter for one of their TMNT projects, it was an overwhelming success. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past surpassed its goal and eventually raised a total of $862,212. This positive outcome may be just one reason why the company has decided to create yet another crowdfunding campaign for their next big game based on a previously existing franchise by the name of Munchkin.

On March 7th, IDW Games will launch a Kickstarter campaign to promote and raise funds for a Munchkin game based on our heroes in a half shell. Although the standard version of the game will be available for sale at various retail stores, the deluxe and ultra deluxe editions will only be offered through this fundraising campaign. Each deluxe edition will include a fully illustrated Level tracker in addition to character standees. This game will also feature entirely new and original artwork from co-creator Kevin Eastman and Tadd Galusha.

For those who are unaware, Munchkin is a card game based on classic tabletop role playing games. The concept is intended to be a bit of an inside joke for fans of RPGs, allowing players to quickly create the most powerful character possible. Munchkin is an award winning game and a fan favorite with many different branded releases. While the standard edition will retail for $24.95, fans can obtain the deluxe editions on Kickstarter for only $29.95.

Considering how Kickstarter campaigns are typically designed, we recommend getting in early if you want the ultra deluxe edition. Chances are that this very special version of the game will be extremely limited (potentially under 1,000 copies) and it may sell out very quickly. Thankfully, since the fundraising campaign is three weeks away, most shellheads should have plenty of time to save up the money they need to get whichever version they want when it finally launches.

Injustice 2 Will Be Adding TMNT Fighter Pack On February 13th

A few months ago, Warner Bros. Interactive revealed that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles would be coming to their game Injustice 2. At the time, fans were very excited about the prospect of fighting with their favorite heroes in a half shell. Although there wasn’t a definitive release date provided at the time, we now know that they intend to provide the TMNT fighter pack on February 13th, 2018.

Warner Bros. released a new trailer to promote the DLC featuring actual footage of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting in Injustice 2. In the trailer below, we finally get to see the turtles in action and hear some of their funny quips. All four characters have some pretty interesting attacks and they work together to accomplish some very fun finishing moves. Unlike some of the more recent iterations of our half-shelled heroes, this version of the TMNT appears to be heavily based on the original animated series and Mirage comics.

 

When fans first discovered that Warner Bros. was adding the TMNT to Injustice 2, they were concerned that this fighter pack would not allow them to control all four turtles. As you can see in the trailer above, it looks like Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo and Michelangelo all have separate attacks they can perform. This trailer also reveals a few references to the classic arcade game Turtles in Time. In addition to the pizza and the shell-shocked attack, sharp-eyed shellheads will also note the “Big Apple” and “3 AM” stickers on Mikey’s skateboard.

Needless to say, it looks like this could be a really fun fighter pack for Injustice 2. I’m sure we’d all like to see a proper TMNT fighting game hit the market once again, but this is definitely a nice concession in lieu of that. If you haven’t already purchased the game, it is currently available for under $40 on Amazon. The TMNT DLC will be available on February 13th for only $9.99.

New Injustice 2 Fighter Pack Will Include the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

It’s been a while since we saw the TMNT in a proper fighting game, but it looks like that’s all about to change. Over the weekend, WB Games unveiled their latest DLC for Injustice 2, and our heroes in a half shell were included. The trailer for this fighter pack gave us our first look at the turtles, immediately calling back to one of the most popular scenes in the history of this franchise. In true shellraising form, Raphael came out of the darkness wearing his disguise from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990) movie. A few moments later, Raph took off the coat and his brothers stood by his side.

Say what you will about the voice acting, but I don’t think anyone will take issue with their character design. It looks like this version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is based more on the comics and the original movies. Considering that Viacom currently owns the rights to several different versions of the TMNT, it’s not entirely surprising to see WB Games being very careful with their depiction of the turtles. Whatever the case may be, it’s definitely nice to see the ninja turtles in a fighting game.

 

The one question that remains is how WB Games will handle the turtles. After all, previous fighter packs have only included three characters each, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are going to be joined in this DLC by both The Atom and Enchantress. A fighter pack with 6 new characters is very unlikely, so chances are that you’ll only have access to one turtle while your brothers will probably provide assist attacks and special combo moves.

If you don’t already own Injustice 2, we recommend picking up the Ultimate Edition in order to get this fighter pack for free. Alternatively, it’s worth noting that the game will more than likely be on sale at various different retail locations on Black Friday. Fighter Packs typically sell for $19.99. You can expect the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to be added to the roster very soon.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past Now Available

Earlier this year, fans were very excited to hear that IDW was planning an awesome new TMNT board game. After a successful Kickstarter, the company quickly began production on the game. Even so, we all knew that it would probably take a while before we saw this awesome new title on store shelves. Thankfully, Kickstarter supporters have finally received their copies and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past has officially hit the market. Heck, they even threw a launch party to celebrate the release of this shellraising new Ninja Turtles adventure!

At an average price of $70-$100, this isn’t exactly the cheapest board game you’ll ever buy. That being said, it is an incredibly detailed and intricate game that has been hand crafted specifically for the fans. Intended for audiences age 14 and up, this isn’t exactly a simplistic experience that younger fans will appreciate. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past was aimed mostly at older shellheads and a community of gamers who appreciate more complex, skill based board games. If you are looking for simple fun that the whole family can enjoy, this might not be the best option.

Although it might not be the perfect TMNT game for all fans, it’s definitely going to be an amazing adventure for those who enjoy a more nuanced gaming experience. Titles such as this typically carry a higher price tag, so it shouldn’t come as too big of a surprise that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past will cost you a lot more than Monopoly. Considering that this board game was crafted with the help of Kevin Wilson (creator of the Arkham Horror series), it’s safe to say that the journey is worth whatever price you may be asked to pay.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows of the Past may not be a game for everyone, but it’s definitely going to be a welcome sight for many shellheads and gamers alike. Although there was clearly a demand for this game, something tells me that they didn’t produce it in large numbers. With that in mind, you may want to consider picking up Shadows of the Past sooner rather than later. Here’s hoping that everyone who wants the board game manages to get a copy before it’s sold out!

The Next TMNT Game Should Totally Be An RPG

Over the years, shellheads have been eagerly awaiting the next good Ninja Turtles game. Depending on who you ask, opinions will range on how long it’s been since we saw a truly excellent TMNT game. Most of us were hopeful that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan would be the title we had all been waiting for, but sadly that wasn’t the case. As the years go by, we continue to wait – perhaps impatiently – for a developer to produce a truly excellent game that is worthy of the franchise lore. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Activision doesn’t seem to be handling the task very well.

That all being said, I think it’s time to admit something: Although it may be possible for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to work in a modern beat ’em up title, the best TMNT games in that genre came out of the 8-bit and 16-bit era. It might be time to consider a different approach with this franchise, and make the move to an entirely different genre. Rather than do another hack and slash button mashing title that feels unoriginal and uninspired, why not try a game genre that will allow us to explore the actual lore behind the Ninja Turtles universe?

I think it’s time that developers consider making an RPG TMNT game.

There are probably some fans who don’t enjoy the RPG genre, but perhaps even they would like to see a change of pace for the turtles. Although there are a lot of different genres in which Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could easily fit, the role-playing game might be the best option. For one thing, we’ve already enjoyed a fairly popular traditional RPG in the universe with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness. Sadly, that product came out several decades ago, but we recently saw signs that there may be a returning interest in this kind of traditional gaming.

Earlier this year, IDW crowdfunded a new TMNT board game based on the comic book series. The project was an overwhelming success, blowing away expectations in every possible fashion. Dice Masters has also been making a few Ninja Turtles products as well, but we have yet to determine how popular those games will be. The point I’m trying to make here is that there is clearly a demand for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle games that allow the fans to experience the lore surrounding the franchise and become a part of that universe. When it comes to video games, the most story driven titles out there are RPGs.

Imagine, if you will, a JRPG inspired TMNT game with 20-30 hours of pure story and adventure. The turtles would have a set of attacks that they could learn over the course of the game, and the typical potion would be replaced with pizza slices. Our heroes in a half shell would have the opportunity to face off against all kinds of enemies, with foot soldiers and mousers potentially being among the basic enemies they would find early on. This type of video game would allow for developers to focus more heavily on the story and create something truly epic that shellheads would really enjoy.

We really haven’t seen a game like this, and I think it may be time to consider moving away from the tried and true beat ’em ups of the past. The genre is growing a little stale for the turtles, and it would be nice to see them move on to – greener – pastures.
