TMNT: OOTS B Roll Footage – MINOR SPOILERS!

Are you excited for Out of the Shadows and want to get every morsel of information you can before the movie premieres on June 3rd? Well if you don’t mind some spoilers around the themes, style, and a towards the end plot point, we’ve got some juicy tidbits for you, courtesy of Comicbook.com! The fine people over at www.comicbook.com released two videos to Youtube this past weekend, sharing B-roll footage of the movie! It’s got some looks at scenes, the Turtle actors in their cgi suits, and a brief look at some of the practical effects weaved into the cgi. That’s right, not everything in the movie is cgi, folks!

As is the way with these things, you can’t hear much of the dialogue. But that’s good, since you won’t be spoiling too much. You can pick out some interesting notes about the movie though, especially ways that they responded to fan criticism of the first film. Check out Shredder’s armor, or the individual foot soldiers. That’s all I’ll say for now. Without further ado, here is the B-roll!

TMNT: Out of the Shadows Premiere!

Today I had the privilege to attend the TMNT: Out of the Shadows premiere at Madison Square Garden in NYC! It was a great time, as the Turtles had taken over the whole Garden. This was my first time attending a red carpet event, and it was great to do it for such a highly anticipated movie!

When I said Paramount and the Turtles took over MSG, I meant it. They had 3 platforms set up for the red carpet, 4 color coordinated cars, and a carnival set up for the youngest audience members. It was a lively atmosphere, and many of the stars of the movie were interviewed for the crowds.

I had actually missed the interview with Michael Bay and Stephen Amell, but I was able to catch Sheamus and Gary Anthony Williams, Laura Linney, Will Arnett, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard, and Pete Ploszek, Carmello Anthony, and Tyler Perry! They talked about how much it meant for them to be involved in the Turtles history, what it was like to take on their specific characters, what it was like filming with CGI characters, and filming in Madison Square Garden. It was fun to hear each recount watching TMNT growing up, and Laura Linney shared the story on how she was hired for the movie. Apparently, she received a whole pizza and a case of Orange Crush with a letter asking if she’d be interested in the film. She sent a picture back with her on the ground, empty pizza box, and cans of Orange Crush littered around her! I want to accept a job like that!

Everyone was really into it and we got to hear some fun stories about the film. Tyler Perry also tried to convince Paramount to give away the cars on display. Our host informed him that they had given away masks and other gifts to the kids and that kids wouldn’t be interested in the cars. Perry replied, “But the fathers would!” Don’t leave out us older fans without kids!

We finally moved into the theater and were in for a few more surprises. Not only did we get to see the stars enter the theater and join us but we got a surprise performance by none other than long time Turtle friend Vanilla Ice!

Vanilla Ice performed a new song influenced by Go Ninja Go! with the Turtles (costumes styled after the original 1990 movie)!

After Vanilla Ice we went straight into the movie. I’ll leave any specific thoughts for our official review, but I really think you’re going to like it! After the movie I got a chance to take some pictures with Sheamus and Brian Tee (Shredder), and Titus O’neil of WWE.

I’ve never been to a premiere before and it was a lot of fun. I took so many pictures, got to meet some really cool people, and got to be a part of the first group of people to see the movie! I want to tell you all about the movie so bad, but you should really go into it spoiler-free. The best part of the whole day though was seeing all the kids enjoying TMNT. There were so many kids in shirts, face paint, and costumes, and they really enjoyed the movie. They cheered when the lights dimmed for the movie, when the logo popped up, and there was a lot of applause throughout the film as various scenes played out. It’s great to see our favorite franchise has so much life in it.

 

Finally, since I like to end articles on a funny note, here’s my story: I was standing in the theatre, trying to get photos for this article, and none other than Stephen Amell walks down the aisle, one row in front of me. I was able to get some photos of him earlier, but they were all at a distance, but here he comes: walking right by me. So I take my phone out and take a picture, not even realizing what was going on. After the pic, I see him looking right at me! He was eating some popcorn and was totally giving me a look like, ” Really guy? I’m eating here.” I looked at the picture and he’s giving me the exact same look! I felt so bad, but it was really funny, so to make it up to him, I tweeted this:

Brad Garrett Replaces Fred Armisen As Krang in Out of the Shadows

For those who weren’t aware, it was reported a few months ago that Fred Armisen would be providing the voice of Krang in the new movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Unfortunately, Armisen’s role was never confirmed with Paramount and we are now being told that he may never have been signed on for the film. Instead of Armisen, it would appear that veteran actor Brad Garrett will be taking on the role of Krang. I’d love to say that this might still be a rumor, but we actually have photographic evidence proving the potential legitimacy of the story.

Brad Garrett is a fantastic actor with a lot of street cred. He has performed a lot of voice acting throughout his career, including roles in films such as Finding Nemo and Ratatouille. However, he never really did anything fancy with his voice in these roles, instead electing to just provide his own natural voice for each character. This might be a problem for some fans, because he has a characteristically low voice that one could almost describe as velvety smooth. If there is one character in all of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lore who does not have a smooth, baritone voice, it is Krang.

To be fair, we have no way of knowing whether or not Brad will elect to stretch his acting muscles and truly recreate the Krang voice that we are all familiar with. Sadly, his history in the business would seem to indicate that this might not be the case, and we might have to expect the new Krang to have a much different voice. The very thought of this disappoints me, because I know that a lot of fans are going to be turned off by a version of the Utrom leader that doesn’t quite sound right. This is not to say that Garrett isn’t a good actor – he is absolutely fantastic – I’m just not sure that he’s right for this role.

This casting has been all but confirmed with Adrenaline Studios, where Brad Garrett recorded his lines, so it’s a safe bet that this is what we will be hearing when the movie releases in two weeks. I’ll reserve my judgment until the film actually comes out, but this news has definitely left me a little bit worried about what we can expect from Krang in Out of the Shadows. I really do enjoy Garrett’s work, so I’ll have to hear what he came up with for this role before making a judgment call about whether or not this was a bad decision. Remember shellheads: always watch the movie before criticizing it! (and yes, that goes for everyone who is unhappy with those Ghostbusters trailers as well)

Raphael “Takes Out the Trash” in Latest Out of the Shadows Clip

As the release date for this movie gets closer, the ad campaign from Paramount reveals even more details about the film. Speaking as someone who remembers how sparse the advertisements were for the first film, this is definitely welcome news. With this latest Out of the Shadows clip, the studio has officially revealed a scene which was previously only shown during the Kid’s Choice Awards. If you missed the clip shown during that event, this is definitely going to be new material. However, if you did watch this a few months ago, the only thing that has changed is that we are now hearing the score for the film in the background.

To be honest, this has been one of my favorite clips from the film thus far. Raphael has always been a brash character who was quick to jump into action, so it’s nice to see that nothing has changed in this Out of the Shadows clip. Clearly he’s a little afraid of heights when he’s being asked to jump out of a plane, but he has no trouble jumping out of the back of a moving vehicle. There’s something about this scene that genuinely feels like an event I actually tried to pull off with my TMNT toys when I was younger, and that is definitely a fun memory.

In this Out of the Shadows clip, Raphael takes matters into his own hands and clotheslines a few baddies in style. This is exactly the kind of shellraising action that I was hoping to see in the sequel, and I’m glad to see that it will apparently be making an appearance early on in the film. According to what we know about the movie thus far from various sources, this is supposedly one of the opening sequences in Out of the Shadows.

If the filmmakers and actors are to be believed, the movie starts out with this awesome action packed moment, moves on to a plane crash in the middle, and eventually features a battle against Krang in the Technodrome. I don’t know how any self respecting fan could have a problem with that, but apparently there are still a lot of fans who refuse to see this movie. Thankfully, it would not appear that they are a part of the majority.

Relationship Between Casey Jones and Raphael in TMNT 2

Many fans have been wondering about the attitude of Casey Jones in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. As the film nears its eventual release, we have learned a lot more about the character from trailers, clips and interviews with the star Stephen Amell. In one of his most recent interviews, Amell spoke with IGN about the role and clarified something that shellheads everywhere have been concerned about. The relationship between Raphael and Casey Jones has always been a tumultuous one, so you can imagine that this is something that fans dearly want to see continue in the latest film. According to Amell, we have nothing to fear.

“He’s got a slightly adversarial relationship with Raphael. But that’s sort of Raphael’s personality and Casey’s personality. With Michelangelo, Donatello, and Leonardo, he’s much more amicable, but it’s a little bit confrontational with Raphael.”

 

When Casey and Raph first meet in both the original comics and the 90’s movies, their attitude toward one another is notably combative. Although they eventually become good friends, the two hotheads don’t necessarily like one another at first. Casey Jones and Raphael have always been a yin and yang for the franchise; they are two sides of the same coin. Originally, Casey was a character who hated criminals and literally wanted to beat them to death. This is where Raph came in and tried to convince him to change his ways, resulting in a fight that is of absolute importance to their characterization.

It’s nice to see that they haven’t veered too far off course for the origin story of Casey Jones – and according to Amell, this movie does attempt to build a new origin for the character:

“…it’s sort of an origin story for Casey Jones, and it’s certainly left in the position where if the franchise were to continue and be successful, that he could certainly come back.”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows is shaping up to be a huge hit at the box office, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Stephen Amell return as Casey in a third film of this franchise. That being said, I know that a lot of fans would also prefer to see a darker film (or potentially a television series) that focuses entirely on the character of Casey Jones.

This is a character with a fairly dark background that is worthy of exploring. I think there is potential for a movie that digs into the full story of this vigilante hero. With the success of films like Deadpool, I think it’s time for the studios to start thinking about taking a chance on a more adult version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles universe.

Whatever happens, it’s nice to know that Jones will at least have the same kind of role in these new movies as he has had from the very beginning.
