Kick Some Shell in This New TMNT Game For Your Phone

Yes, another few weeks has gone by and there is yet another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game to talk about. While the previous title we discussed was only available on the 3DS, this title is available on the app store for Android and iOS users. In other words, if you own a smartphone, you can probably play this. Of course, the important question here is whether or not you want to? Well, to be honest, it does look pretty cool, and it’s definitely worth a look.

Based on the new movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from producer Michael Bay and director Jonathan Liebesman, this title offers the beat ‘em up gameplay that TMNT fans cherish without the use of clunky touch screen controls. How did they do it? Well, to be perfectly honest, they took the gameplay style from another game. They got The Game Bakers, makers of the game Combo Crew, to take the easy and fun controls of that game and put them into a turtle themed title.

If this sounds cheap, just remember that every beat ‘em up from the late 80’s and early 90’s was essentially copying the same formula that worked for other titles. While the good games had their own notably different and entertaining experiences (such as Turtles in Time), the base formula of walking down a street and beating up thugs was pretty much the same across the board. Taking a formula that worked well in one game and porting it to another title isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially if it’s literally the same developers doing the job.

Besides, we’re talking about a branch of gaming that hasn’t fully been explored yet. When it comes to innovative new controls, we’re still on the ground floor with regards to smartphone games. Just as many a developer copied the success of Super Mario Bros in the mid 80’s when crafting dozens of side scrolling platformers, it’s completely forgivable at this stage in mobile gaming to take controls that work well in one game and use them in an entirely different title.

Oh, and these controls? they’re awesome. Instead of creating on-screen D-pads and buttons, as many developers have done with their touch screen games, The Game Bakers have created a system where swiping across the screen will perform an attack, allowing you to beat up the thugs on your screen with quick precision skills. By racking up combos, you’ll be able to fill your special attack meter which you can use to unleash a co-op attack with your turtle brethren.

As you play the game, you’ll unlock new weapons to purchase and new combos to perform. With both a story mode and a survival mode, this game is beefy enough to warrant the $3.99 price point, even if it is just a title designed for your mobile phone. Believe it or not, we could be talking about a movie tie-in game that doesn’t suck. Although some will be bothered by the fact that it is based on the new movie, I’m sure there are a lot of shellheads out there that can appreciate a good TMNT beat ‘em up, regardless of the specific version of the Ninja Turtles that it’s based on.

Totally Turtle Games – Turtles in Time (Arcade)

When Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles proved to be an arcade smash hit for Konami, there was no choice but to follow it up with another four-player side-scrolling adventure. Released in 1991, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time brought the turtles back into the arcade for another round of Foot Clan butt kicking.

As the turtles watched April O’Neil do another news report, Krang and his giant robot body flew down from the sky to steal the Statue of Liberty. Shredder interrupts the news feed and taunts his reptilian nemeses, begging that they come after him if they dare. The boys spring into action, but upon encountering the ninja master, he sends them through a time warp. To return home and save NYC, the boys must battle through different time periods, including prehistoric, pirate, and old west levels. Eventually the turtles return to the Technodrome, where they face off against Shredder for the final time.

Hoping to capitalize on the success of the first arcade game, Turtles in Time kept most of the game play and controller functions intact. The player can control any of the four turtles and perform jumps and attacks. However, the controls can be combined to perform new and unique special attacks, such as Leonardo’s katana spin and Michelangelo’s leap forward with his nunchaku. Additionally, the enemies can now interact more with the environment, with the turtles being able to throw a Foot Soldier at other bad guys, or throw them towards the camera. Slide tackles, dash attacks, air attacks, and further special attacks simply add new elements to the game that make full use of the significant improvement in graphics and design this game underwent.

The entire cavalcade of villains returned again for this game, with Foot and Rock Soldiers rounding out the regular enemies in each level. Bosses included fan favorites like Leatherhead, Baxter Stockman, Metalhead, Cement Man, Tokka and Rahzar, Krang, and Shredder. Each appeared at the end of a level, and multiple hits could charge a power attack that would unleash extra power to bring them down and move through the game. Noticeably absent, though, were Bebop and Rocksteady, however their inclusion in the game would be rectified in other versions.

Like its predecessor, Turtles in Time found its way to the home entertainment system to add to its success. Now on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System for two players, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time featured extended game play and new modes. Two levels (“Sewer Surfin’” and “Neon Night Riders”) were changed to bonus levels only; new bosses like Rat King, Slash, Bebop and Rocksteady, and Super Shredder were added for a more in-depth experience; and more regular enemies were added, including mousers and boxing robots called Road-Kill Rodneys. In addition to the story, players could now enter a time trial mode, as well as the return of a player vs. player battle mode.

After being released, Turtles in Time was widely applauded by critics and fans. It quickly became Konami’s best-selling arcade title, and many critics loved the improved graphics, game play, and music. While many also thought that it got a bit repetitive and didn’t last long enough, overall the game was given a high B/low A rating all around. It was released again as unlockable in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3, as well as alone on the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network in 2009. Due to licensing issues, it was removed from both in 2011.

Turtles in Time is called by many the best TMNT game. Whether that’s true or not, it was easily one of the best. It took a familiar franchise and added a new gimmick to continue its popularity. While the “time travel” part was rather short, and didn’t cover too many time periods (with about half the game spent in present day NYC anyway), it was still incredible fun, and fans can only hope that this game finds its way back to consoles someday soon.

Top 10 Lessons Learned About TMNT From SDCC 2014

San Diego Comic-con is one of the biggest events in the geek world, and you know that the turtles are going to make their presence felt in a big way at a convention like this. With that in mind, we’ve decided to share some of the most awesome revelations that we discovered about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles over the weekend at SDCC.

1. Freddy Kreuger and The Crypt Keeper Will be on Nickelodeon’s TMNT

…well, maybe not their characters, but the famous actors who portrayed these characters will also be doing some voice acting for the hit show during Season 3. Robert Englund (Freddy) and John Kassir (Crypt Keeper) both have unforgettably amazing voice acting skills, so it will be interesting to see and hear their characters on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Apparently they are set to play two oversized beavers known as “The Dream Beavers.” I wouldn’t expect anything less crazy from the Ninja Turtles!

2. The Shredder Looks Even More Menacing in Lego Form

Lego set up this amazing display of a life sized Shredder built from Legos!

3. Michael Bay Isn’t the Only One Making Lifelike Turtles

The guys at Figment Foundry created some pretty awesome TMNT costumes that actually look a lot like real turtles!

4. Jon Heder Will Also Voice a Character in Nickelodeon’s TMNT

Well known for his role as Napoleon in the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite, Heder will be playing a mutant frog (perhaps a reference to the Punk Frogs?) known as Napoleon Dyna-frog. We’re not sure where this one is going, but it definitely sounds interesting.

5. Robbie Rist is Making a Comeback in Nick’s Series as Mondo Gecko

That’s right, not only is Mondo Gecko making a comeback, but so is the voice actor who played Michelangelo in the all three live action films from the 90’s! Welcome back to the show, Robbie! We can’t wait to see what you do with everyone’s favorite Gecko.

6. Muckman is Also Returning to the Show

Yet another popular villain from the original animated series, Muckman will also be making an appearance once more in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles very soon.

7. The Turtles of the New Movie Won’t Be Speaking in Hashtags

When asked whether or not the latest iteration of the turtles would still be using surfer speak in their dialogue, director CraveOnline’s William Bibbiani asked director Jonathan Liebesman whether or not they would be speaking in hashtags. The director emphatically answered thus:

“No. No hashtags. No, there’s definitely still surfer speak. Maybe there should have been hashtags, but I don’t want hashtags.”

Well, that’s definitely nice to know.

8. Liebesman Also Confirmed (once more) the Turtles Are Not Aliens

During the same interview with CraveOnline, Liebesman said “I’m not sure they were ever really aliens, but they’re mutants.” He also expressed that making them mutants was important to him.

9. April O’Neil’s Fight Scene Was Cut From the New Movie

This is actually kind of sad news, given how little we actually see strong female characters in pop culture nowadays and given that April is typically thought of as a pretty strong female character (especially by those who have played her in the past). Megan Fox had this to say about the issue:

“I had a really awesome scene where I was fighting The Foot Clan,” Fox said,”but I think they were like, ‘Why would a tiny journalist be able to kick so much ass? A lot of girl power ended up on the cutting room floor, unfortunately.’”

10. Mondo is Making TMNT Toys

Taking a break from making some of the most awesome posters and artwork that any pop culture aficionado has ever seen, Mondo will soon start making toys for a variety of properties, one of them being Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The one toy they did show off is an awesomely kid-like interpretation of Michelangelo holding an original Michelangelo Ice Cream Bar. Get ready to put this one on your wishlist, guys – it looks totally awesome.
