If you’ve been keeping up with Nickelodeon’s DVD releases for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then you’re probably already aware of how this works. Nickelodeon likes to put a collection of episodes from each season on individual DVD sets, eventually producing an entire season of content across multiple releases. Thankfully, they release all of their TMNT DVD sets in episode order, so it’s not too difficult to put everything together in the end. This trend would appear to continue with their latest offering, the first TMNT DVD set with episodes from the fourth season of the show, entitled Beyond the Known Universe.
In this season of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, our heroes in a half shell have found themselves traveling through space with their newest companion, Professor Honeycutt. Featuring the first twelve episodes of the fourth season, Beyond the Known Universe brings us the first half of season four on two discs. In addition to the episodes themselves, there will also be at least one special feature on the TMNT DVD set entitled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Kicking Shell and Taking Names.” As per usual, some of the first printings of this set will also include a few extras for collectors, including a Michelangelo zipper pull and movie cash toward a ticket for Out of the Shadows.
With a release date of May 24th, this TMNT DVD set might actually offer an excellent opportunity to bring home the latest episodes of the series while also saving some money on a ticket to the new movie from Paramount Pictures. If this set is released at the same price point as the other sets in the series, chances are that it will have an MSRP of $19.99 and sell for around $14.99 on the open market. We have yet to determine how much movie cash will be provided, but it’s a safe bet to assume that it will probably be worth at least $7.50 towards a ticket for the new TMNT sequel.
I’m sure I speak for a lot of people when I say that I would love to see Nickelodeon start releasing this series on an HD physical platform like Blu-ray, but as of yet we haven’t seen any indication that they have any plans to do so. At the very least, they’re giving us the series in an easily consumable and collectible manner which will allow us to easily re-watch and enjoy the story in episode order from start to finish. With that being said, I still remain hopeful for an eventual blu-ray release of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Until then, at least releases such as Beyond the Known Universe are well crafted and offer a lot of bang for your buck.
