Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 4 Returns in February

When it comes to how they schedule their television shows, sometimes it can be nearly impossible to figure out Nickelodeon’s line of reasoning. For some reason, they keep splitting up the seasons of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and taking multiple season breaks. They never really explain why they are taking these breaks, but I’m sure there’s some method behind the madness. Without fail, they always come back within a few months to let the fans know when they can expect to see the next episode of TMNT. This time around, they have officially announced that our heroes in a half shell will be returning to finish off the fourth season on February 5th.

In a fun little tweet the other day, Nickelodeon’s TMNT Twitter account broke the news that we would see the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return to television in just three weeks. The tweet featured Seth Green (Leonardo) Rob Paulsen (Donatello) Sean Astin (Raphael) and Greg Cipes (Michelangelo) yelling “Cowabunga!”to all of their fans on Twitter. It’s always nice to see this group together, because they don’t always make a lot of appearances outside of the studio. Most of them have other gigs to worry about, but they all love being turtles!



The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will return with the 23rd episode of the 4th season. According to IMDb, the episode is entitled Tokka vs. The World, and promises to be a lot of fun for fans of the series. The 24th episode will air the week after on February 12th, and the following weeks will likely bring the final two episodes of the series. Expect Season 5 to start sometime this spring – potentially right after season 4 finishes up.

Unfortunately, we still have yet to receive confirmation about whether or not the fifth season will be the final appearance of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Nickelodeon. It’s still a very real possibility, but something tells me that this would disappoint a lot of fans. As usual, we’ll probably have to wait and see what happens in the future and hope for the best.

Brandon Auman Trashes Spoilers For Season Four Finale

Over the past week or two, it has become readily apparent that Nickelodeon may have prematurely aired the fourth season finale in South Korea. With the holiday season attracting an entirely different kind of viewership in the United States, it’s likely that Nick decided to push this episode back simply to avoid conflicting audiences. Alternatively, it’s also entirely possible that they just wanted to stretch season four out as long as they could. Whatever the reasoning was behind this move, one thing is for sure: we weren’t supposed to know anything about their plans for the season finale until February.

As a matter of fact, lead writer Brandon Auman actually took issue with the fact that spoilers for the season four finale are being shared via social media. His advice reveals the frustration that any creator would have after seeing people spoil their work for others, but he may have been a bit too harsh in his assessment of the situation. According to Auman, this is the approach you should take with potential spoilers:

“If you see spoilers on tumblr please don’t share them, pretend tumblr is like that cursed VHS in The Ring. Crap what am I saying, you kids don’t know what VHS or The Ring is. I have no idea who is posting all of this stuff, but now the spoilers are everywhere. Please don’t share.”


Needless to say, it’s a little rude to suggest that anyone on tumblr is too young to remember The Ring or even what a VHS tape looks like. It’s especially unkind to a lot of the younger fans who currently watch Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. That being said, it was clearly just a joke, and I’m sure Brandon Auman didn’t mean to offend anyone with this statement. Auman is a pretty good guy and an amazing creator, so it’s hard to be upset with him over his well deserved frustrations.

Sadly, spoilers are already floating all over the internet, and it will be difficult to avoid them until the final episode of season four is finally released in February. Regardless of the difficulty, we should all do our best to keep from spoiling the finale for ourselves. As usual, you can trust that we’ll do our best to keep from spoiling anything for our loyal readers!

Tokka is Coming to Nickelodeon’s TMNT

Remember those two villains that Shredder created in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze? Well, at least one of them is going to be making a return to the franchise in Nickelodeon’s TMNT series. During a panel at Wondercon 2016, it was revealed that a future episode from the fourth season of the series will introduce two new characters.

One of these characters will be a new creation in the form of Chompy Picasso, but the other will be a completely new take on the oft forgotten Tokka. Rahzar has been in the series for a while now in the form of Dogpound’s second mutation, which begs the question of whether or not Tokka will also become a recurring character.

 

As for Tokka’s appearance in the series, it’s worth noting that they have significantly changed his character. Whereas the villain was once just an evil henchmen, Tokka has now become a “giant, magma rock kaiju monster that breaths fire.” Chances are that he’ll be just as stupid in this iteration, but this time his stupidity might actually pose a real threat.

Personally, I don’t have a problem with this change, because this baddie was literally created to avoid a copyright dispute. As I understand it, they couldn’t secure the rights to Bebop and Rocksteady for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II, so they decided to make Tokka and Rahzar instead. Since then, we really haven’t seen much of either character, so I think it’s fair to take liberties with their depiction.

To be honest, a fire breathing kaiju monster sounds way more awesome than whatever the heck Tokka was in The Secret of the Ooze. As for the other new character, Chompy Picasso is supposedly meant to become Raphael’s new pet. Of course, the last time Raph had a pet, it ended up causing quite a bit of trouble for the turtles, so it will be interesting to see if Chompy develops into anything more than just a pet.

When it comes to Tokka, I fully expect his story to last all of one or two episodes at most, so I doubt there’s any reason to be upset about this interesting take on his character. If anything, we should be happy that they took an otherwise dull character from the past and made it way more radical!

TMNT – “The Weird World of Wyrm” Review

On their way to the next stop, the turtles get in some training with the Fugitoid’s simulator, taking on Chris Bradford in all three of his forms. Their post-workout meal is interrupted, though, but a distress signal from a rocket cleaved in half. The boys head out to investigate, but there’s no one left alive. While the others debate what happened, Casey finds himself a hypercube – a device with 5th dimension access – being guarded by space zombies. The team fights its way back to the ship, but something is amiss with Casey Jones, who refuses to give up the cube even when Professor Honeycutt warns of its dangers.

While everyone else is preoccupied, Casey sneaks down to the professor’s vault and opens the cube, unleashing a 5th dimensional being known as Wyrm. Wyrm will grant the team three wishes, but two are quickly used (Casey wished for the space zombies, and Donatello wished Casey would be less dumb), leaving only one wish left. However, Wyrm trapped the team in a 5th dimensional prison of his own, and Professor Honeycutt reveals that if the diabolically mischievous creature grants all three wishes, he will be set free completely

The turtles battle to keep Wyrm contained, but in the heat of the moment Raphael uses the final wish. However, his wish can’t even be used effectively, as he wishes for a weapon to destroy the creature, and the rules of the wishes state that the wishes can’t be used to harm the Wyrm. With that, the all-powerful being is free, and begins a destructive rampage on the universe. The only one that may be able to help is the now hyper-intelligent Casey Jones, but after running scenarios in his mind, Casey decides the only logical course of action is to join Wyrm.

Casey mercilessly fights the others in Wyrm’s illusory world, and then Wyrm grants his new friend one last wish to destroy his friends. However, Casey’s intelligence means easily outsmarting the creature, and the boy uses the wish to guarantee that they never found the cube, returning Wyrm to his eternal prison.

It’s been a while since there was a Casey-ish focused episode, and like all the episodes that are suppose to be more about a supporting character, that individual did not get terribly much in the way of development. Casey got to be the smart one who saved the day, but only through sheer accident, and certainly not extended through the episode. The wish to make him smarter was only utilized at the very end, after all. It’s a shame that it wasn’t utilized more, or that Wyrm wasn’t allowed to stay free for a while, with Casey actually joining him until some point down the road this season. However, solving these problems quickly and refusing to take a real risk seems to be the tone of the show for a while now, to its detriment.

It’s fairly obvious at this point that the battle with the Triceratons is going to take a back seat to one-off space adventures this season. While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it does present a couple of issues. First, the show runs the risk of being the same thing as last season in a different locale. (Yes, the point of individual episodes like this is to allow the average viewer to jump in anywhere without being too lost, but that doesn’t mean the story has to be sacrificed.) Something the first two seasons did really well was having each standalone episode still include something toward the main plot for the season. In the last season+ now, that seems to have been lost. It may sound like nitpicking, but for fans that have invested time and energy in the series, it should continue to pay dividends in terms of great storytelling and character development. The show has sacrificed both in the last year (possibly for any number of reasons, but certainly the continually dwindling viewership has to come into play). If it can pick that back up, then the show could become great again – and it seemed like that was the route being taken with the destruction of Earth. Overall, it was another so-so episode that didn’t really appear to add anything to the development of the plot or the characters (there wasn’t even a “space apples” line!)

TMNT – “The Moons of Thalos 3” Review

After leaving their pit stop, the Fugitoid’s ship finds itself smack dab in the middle of the Triceraton fleet. It doesn’t take long for the ship to be shot down, crash-landing on an ice moon. To avoid freezing, the heroes must find a local supply of metal that can patch up the ship. However, they are not alone; the Triceratons had been chasing down two Salamandrian warriors, and the turtles’ ship caused the two amphibians to crash as well.

As the heroes make their way to the supply of metal, the Salamandrians attack. Though there is a brief moment where it seems like the two factions will work together, a misunderstanding causes the fighting to escalate – and the turtles to be buried under a mountain. Fortunately, the boys and their friends survive and continue their quest.

Proceeding to their destination, Raphael wonders if they could work with the Salamandrians, especially the female, who he seems to have a crush on. Breaking off from the others, Raph finds the amphibians and tries to convince them to join forces. Talks are interrupted, though, when the girl sends Raph plunging down the mountain again, and both factions find themselves face-to-face with ice dragons. The beasts freeze both Donatello and the Salamandrian commander, but Raph manages to save the girl just in time, earning her respect – and possibly her affection. As a way to call her by a much easier-to-pronounce name, Raph suggests she take the moniker of Mona Lisa.

With his new friends, Raph returns to his brothers and saves the whole gang (and Michelangelo dubs the male Salamandrian Sal Commander). Together, the team finds a Triceraton space mine that they can salvage to fix their ships. Of course, more ice dragons come charging in, but some quick thinking by Donnie saves them temporarily. However, oxygen runs out, and the Fugitoid must race against the clock to save them all from certain death. Successful in repairing all the ships and defrosting the group, Raph and Mona Lisa seal their newfound affection with a kiss, and the Salamandrians return to their own mission.

The early episodes of this season seem like they will be used to introduce all the new characters previously revealed, which is a fine way of doing things. Lord Dregg is supposed to be the main villain, and with the Salamandrians as friends, the turtles can feel a little more comfortable out in space. However, there’s been some discrepancy in how many episodes were actually produced for season four, and if the number is only 20, then it doesn’t seem like there’s really time to waste them on doing nothing (and no, character introduction with no forward motion in the plot is not “something”). There’s a larger mission that is suppose to be completed, so it would be nice if every episode was in furtherance of that mission. That could be accomplished by gathering information, going to a world where the part is likely to be, or any number of other ways, and all of those could also be used for character introduction. There’s no need right now to use up entire episodes like this (though, these standalones have been more of a staple in the last season plus, and they’ve been mostly misses in terms of actually being worthwhile).

 

Unfortunately, there isn’t much to be said for this episode. It just sort of existed, and while it was great to see Raph have a crush (and on a species that could actually result in a real relationship, no less), there was nothing particularly special about it. The name Thalos 3 wasn’t even mentioned in the episode. (Also, it was a little bit bothersome that again the show went with the old trope of “we can’t ‘pronounce’ your name, so we’re going to pretend it doesn’t exist and give the one that works for us” when it came to the Salamandrians.) Hopefully the episodes to follow will start to pick up the story again and push the heroes toward that first piece of the black hole generator.
