Shredder and Casey Jones Statues available for Pre-Order

Shredder and Casey Jones resin statues from IKON Collectables are now available for pre-order.

Based on the 1987 Cartoon designs, each statue stands at 13″ tall and features a manhole base with classic “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” font. These are great standalone pieces, or additions to the previously released series featuring the classic Turtles.

Approximate ship dates are Quarter 2 and 3 of this year, but exact dates aren’t specified yet.

TMNT Rise At C2E2!

Last weekend was C2E2, Chicago’s comic and entertainment expo! This year marked the 10th anniversary for the only comic, cosplay, and pop culture convention in the heart of downtown Chicago. With over 80,000 attendees and hundreds of vendors we scoured the enormous show floor with one topic in mind: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of course!

Though the heavy hitters like Marvel and DC are represented well throughout the convention with an abundance of merchandise, talent, and cosplay it’s fitting to have to look below the surface for the presence of our dear teenage turtled teens. But, fear not, C2E2 had some radical sights to offer Ninja Turtle fans of all ages!

C2E2 also featured none other than voice actor legend Rob Paulson who we know as 1987’s Raphael and 2012’s Donatello. Though his appearance was set around a wild Animaniacs reunion, Mr. Paulson had to mention his legendary TMNT roots especially in a comic crowd.

Comic conventions are always an experience whether you’re supporting your favorite fandoms through cosplay, gaming, or merchandise. I had a wonderful time connecting with some passionate TMNT fans of all ages at C2E2’s tenth anniversary show. We shared many memories on how the Turtles impacted our fandom through the years as well as discussing their independent comic book roots. When it comes to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, everyone always seems to have a fond memory whether it be through comics, toys, cartoons, or movies. I’m eager to see what other comic conventions in Chicago will offer this year in the case of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Upcoming shows include Wizard World in late August and newcomer Comic Con Revolution in June.

I’d like to give a special shoutout to Pulp Culture Comics and Collectables for sharing some radical insight on their TMNT collection. They were some of the friendliest vendors at the con! Also Toy De Jour for a great selection of vintage TMNT figures at great prices!

Usagi Yojimbo leaves Dark Horse for IDW

After a long relationship with Dark Horse Comics, Usagi Yojimbo has a new home at IDW Publishing.

Coming this June, IDW celebrates with Usagi Yojimbo #1, a full color graphic novel library featuring all 35 years of Usagi Yojimbo history, and for the first time ever, Usagi Yojimbo comics in full color.

IDW Publishing is very pleased to announce that industry icon Stan Sakai will bring his critically acclaimed series Usagi Yojimbo to IDW beginning in June. For the first time ever, new monthly Usagi Yojimbo comic books will be published in full color, and IDW will curate a fully-colored graphic novel library of the complete Usagi Yojimbo – all 35 years of its grand storytelling, plus new stories to come!

“I’m delighted to work with IDW Publishing on the new Usagi Yojimbo color series. IDW is a creative company that brings a lot of energy, enthusiasm, and excitement to the table. The IDW family includes many beloved characters, including (of course) the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so it is a natural fit,” says Stan Sakai. “Fans, please look forward to this coming June as we’ll be releasing IDW Usagi Yojimbo #1, action-packed and now fully colored.”
Welcome to the world of Stan Sakai’s Usagi Yojimbo in June with the first thrilling chapter in an all-new three-part story! Set in the Edo period of Japan, this adventure sees Usagi embroiled in a puppet drama where the players are not quite what they seem.
Sakai adds, “Bunraku (Japanese puppetry) captures many elements that make the world of Usagi Yojimbo unique: an adventure filled with Japanese culture, folklore, and history. It also features the return of a long-awaited fan favorite character and Yokai (Japanese supernatural creatures). I’d like to thank the readers for their continued support of Usagi, and if you haven’t read Usagi before, this is a great place to start.”
Marking this milestone with a spectacular selection of covers, Usagi Yojimbo #1 includes a main cover by Stan Sakai, plus variants by Daniel Warren Johnson (Murder Falcon), Kevin Eastman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Walt Simonson (Ragnarök, The Mighty Thor).
Written and illustrated by Stan Sakai for over thirty years and published in over fourteen countries, Usagi Yojimbo is set in a unique world based on 17th century Japan. Miyamoto Usagi, who once served as the personal bodyguard for a Japanese warlord, now traverses this unique world – a landscape populated by ghosts, dinosaurs, monsters, and warriors of all kinds – as a ronin. In his many exciting adventures, the swordsrabbit hones his skills, saves villages, and often finds himself navigating the delicate affairs of national/political significance.

This looks like a fantastic deal for any Usagi Yojimbo fans. I’m really excited to see it come to full color, and I’m super excited for the variant issues for Usiagi Yojimbo #1! Dark Horse is a great comic publisher, but Usagi Yojimbo on IDW makes a ton of sense. And now maybe we’ll get a full TMNT/Yojimbo ongoing crossover series.

New York Toy Fair 2019: Playmates Toys

Playmates Toys has been the long standing exclusive toy creator of current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys since the 80’s. The toys we played with as kids were from the company. TMNT helped them become of of the top toy companies in the world, and Playmates helped TMNT rise to the ranks of pop culture Icons. I was lucky enough to see some of what they have in store for the “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series (and meet Kevin Eastman!) Here’s what Playmates Toys has in stores now, and what they have planned for this year.

Each wave of the core line of figures is showcased here. Even episode specific versions of characters are starting to be showcased, like with the wrestling versions of Leo and Mikey! Big Mama and tiny versions of Meatsweats are also a couple highlights. The figures are highly detailed and super poseable. They look identical to the cartoon they’re based on. And they’re bringing back “Pizza Points!”

The Babble Head line is a fully interactive toy that responds to what you do. It talks when you touch his head, move his arm and you hear sword noises, and I even think he sassed me. These look like a lot of fun!

A few vehicles are already in stores, but they’re going to complete the line very soon. Donnie’s copter-bike is awesome and the Turtle Tank is huge. I’ve seen kids playing with these and they’re a big hit!

The roleplaying toys are a great idea. My brothers and I made our own as kids, but to have an official bandana would make me feel as close to one of the turtles as possible. The weapons and masks are bright and colorful. These will be a great gift for the young turtle fan in your life.

These toys are a bit different from the traditional figures. Nano Clix. Each blind bag contains 3 Nano clix. Each in the shape of one of the turtles, they interlock to form giant figures. The idea is similar to LEGO, but the design reminds me of Barrel of Monkeys. Also available are sets, which come with the Shells and heads to form the larger turtle.

The turtle lair is huge, and so cool! It can fit every core figure for display or playtime. There are tons of details to show off each turtles personality and fits the tone of the show. And there’s a skateboard ramp. It’s a great set for this line of figures.

Kevin Eastman spoke about the longevity of the turtles and a few of his favorite versions. Playmates was one of the first places to give the TMNT a chance and both companies skyrocketed to popularity. The toys are all fantastic and are great for any young turtle fans. New York Toy Fair 2019: NECA Toys

NECA Toys has been one of the top toy brands to carry the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle License. Their TMNT figures consistently sell out with every convention exclusive, and their quarter scale figures based on the 90’s movie have put NECA at the top of every collector’s “must-have” list. With giant reveals in the past, I was excited to see what they had up their sleeve for this year’s Toy Fair. Let’s take a look.

This was a huge reveal that had the convention talking. These figures were on display with no release or details, but I hear we they might be part of another wave of Fred Wolf based figures. As soon we we know more information, we’ll post.

These have been rumored, and now confirmed. These two-packs based on the original cartoon are coming exclusively to Target soon! Really soon. By the end or March soon. The Foot Soldier is shipping to retailers March 18, and Shredder sometime in the spring. The Foot Soldier is impressive, but this Shredder is a piece of art. The detail in the face and clothing is outstanding. It’s a level of detail that can only be done by people who love these characters and want to see them done right. The mask is removable on the Shredder to reveal his Splinter given scar. Shredder’s cape is worth whatever price they want to charge. There’s a chance this one could come to a smaller scale down the line, but don’t wait on this one.

A variation on their TMNT specific diorama that was on sale during SDCC last year, this city is great for showing off any TMNT figures, or any figures, who need a city backdrop. No release date was given, but this is a great piece for anyone looking for something a bit different than their Ikea Detolf.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is only one of the licenses NECA has access to. They have a fantastic lines from Godzilla, Terminator, Alien, and a TON of horror. The Guillermo del Toro line is a perfect fit for the company and I’m excited to see where that goes as well.
