While TMNT was made mainstream through the 1987 TV series, it began as a comic in 1984. The TMNT comic was dark and gritty, featuring a no-nonsense group of turtles that in no way resembled their super-friendly an rarely-serious counterparts from the 1987 animated series.

In 1984, Eastman and Laird brought to life a group of unlikely heroes that in fact started off as a joke (turtles, not exactly known for their speed, stealth, or fighting prowess, made dubious candidates for a group of crime-fighting ninjas).

To this day, TMNT comics continue to provide readers with endless entertainment. As of this writing, there is even talk of a new TMNT comic, so keep eyes out for this!

SDCC 2018: “SHREDDER IN HELL” Miniseries Announced

With Comic Con International (commonly referred to as San Diego Comic Con) in full swing, there was bound to be some TMNT-releated announcements. And while fans got a new look at Rise of the TMNT, there was also news on the comic-front.

Fan favorite artist Mateus Santolouco (Secret History of the Foot Clan) was announced as the creative force behind a new TMNT miniseries – SHREDDER IN HELL! The Shredder has been off the table since the epic events of TMNT #50, and one can infer that this series will kick-off the return of the Turtles’ most feared foe. Mateus Santolouco Writes and Draws an Epic Comic Book Miniseries Featuring TMNT’s Greatest Villain

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 19, 2018) – IDW is proud to announce that acclaimed TMNT artist Mateus Santolouco will both write and draw Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder in Hell, a five-issue miniseries slated to debut in early 2019 that serves as a sequel to the fan-favorite Secret History of the Foot Clan storyline.

Shredder in Hell, the latest chapter in IDW’s groundbreaking TMNT saga, sinks into the nightmarish pits of the afterlife, where the infamous leader of the Foot Clan struggles to survive. In the process, Shredder discovers his true purpose… as well as the origins of the great beings responsible for both destruction and creation in his world.

“I’m very humble and thankful to help expand the rich universe of TMNT, adding new layers to the Turtles‘ main villain,” says Santolouco. “We’re not only revealing Shredder’s role in a conspiracy of divine proportions, but we’ll have a better understanding of his fears and ambitions. Oroku Saki is more human than ever… and this will only make him an even stronger force for the TMNT to face.”

Group Editor Bobby Curnow says, “Shredder in Hell is in many ways a spiritual sequel to the beloved Secret History of the Foot Clan. There’s one crucial difference: whereas before Mateus was just coming into his own as a creator, he is now, five years later, working at a master class level. The art he is producing is unreal, and the story is surprisingly deep and reaches to the core of IDW’s TMNT universe.”

Mateus Santolouco was born in 1979 in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Launching his creative career in advertising, he shifted his attention to comic books in 2006. In addition to his extensive contributions to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise at IDW Publishing, he has worked on such comic book projects as Rampaging Wolverine, Dial H, Wonderlost, 24Seven, Dark Reign: Lethal Legion, Two Guns, and Fall of Cthulhu.

Comixology Has An Insane TMNT Digital Comics Sale

Ever want to read some classic TMNT comics? How about just catching up on the current stuff from IDW? Well then, you’re in luck. Digital comics retailer Comixology currently has an insane sale on Ninja Turtles collections and single issues from the Mirage and IDW eras.

Notable items for sale include:

  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW) Vol 1-17
  • TMNT Ultimate Collections (Mirage) Vol 1-6
  • TMNT Classics (Mirage) Vol 1-10
  • Tales of the TMNT Vol 1-8

What you won’t find are any comics from the Archie era. Also absent is the Image era, though that series is getting reprinted this year. The rights to Mirage Volume 4 are currently held by Peter Laird, so don’t expect to find those stories here either.

The sale itself is on until April 30th.

New video talking with the creators of the new series, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

There isn’t much new news in this, but it does go a bit deeper in to the personalities and types of turtles. I’m still hopeful for the new series. It seems like there is a lot care and thought being put in to the designs and characters. It’s nice to have the appearance different between each turtle. In the past it’s mostly been color and weapon. This series seems like each will have a unique silouette, which could lead to a classic show.

2 New Comics Announced

Speaking of the new show, there will also be a new comic to lead in to the new series! Check out more info about that here. Set for release July 2018 from IDW.

Dark Horse is also releasing a trade paperback of every Usagi Yojimbo/TMNT team up to date. Check out more info about that here. Set for release on September 26, 2018.

New Comic Series Based on RISE OF THE TMNT

With the upcoming animated series RISE OF THE TMNT, it’s only natural that IDW would produce a comic series to accompany it. After all, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) had comic book adaptations from – respectively – Archie Comics, Mirage Studios, and IDW Publishing. While it hasn’t been 100% confirmed that a new series is in IDW’s plans, it’s a safe bet.

What has been confirmed is that a #0 issue from IDW veterans Matthew K. Manning and Chad Thomas will debut ahead of the animated show with a July 2018 release (the show debuts in September 2018), which means fans looking at their first look at this new TMNT iteration should head to their local comic shops. The news comes out of this past weekend’s C2E2, held every April in Chicago, IL. Solicitation for the issue is as follows:

Every Usagi Yojimbo/ TMNT Team-up story collection announced

Dark Horse comics has announced a new trade paperback collecting every Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up to date.

According to Dark Horse, the book will include 1987’s “Turtle Soup and Rabbit Stew,” 1988’s “The Crossing,” 1989’s “The Treaty” 1992’s “Shades of Green” and “Namazu,” published in 2017 by TMNT license-holder IDW Publishing. It’s also said to include bonus material by Usagi Yojimbo creator Stan Sakai.

Usagi Yojimbo has been a long ally of the Ninja Turtles. He was in the 1989 line of action figures released, and has appeared in every cartoon iteration to date. If he was your favorite, you can vote for him here!

Although the anthropomorphic bunny has been with the TMNT since their early years, Cerberus is actually the first crossover character to meet with the turtles. Cerberus teamed with the Turtles in issue 8 of the Mirage series, where he helped the TMNT recover the Time Scepter from Savanti Romero.

Stan Sakai and TMNT creators Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman wrote letters to each other when their comics were 1st coming out. They wrote each other as fans, before eventually collaborating. It makes sense, as each book was released in 1984.

This is a fantastic opportunity to check out a new character with some familiar faces, or just brush up on your TMNT history. With an into from TMNT co-creator Peter Laird, this is sure to be a gem in any comic collection.

The Usagi Yojimbo/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Collection is scheduled for release on Sept. 26, with a cover price of $17.99. The full cover is below.
