A few years ago, fans were excited to discover that LEGO had picked up the licensing rights for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The result was a small but awesome line of TMNT LEGO sets that featured not only the turtles themselves, but also a lot of other important characters as well. During the same time period, the Lego Movie came out and featured Michelangelo in a small but hilarious role. The Ninja Turtles were finally a part of the LEGO family, and fans of both franchises were in heaven. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and LEGO eventually dropped the TMNT license this year.
The moment that the license was dropped, Mega Bloks was quick to come along and pick up where their competitors had left off. This isn’t an uncommon strategy for the company, as they often pick up the best licenses they can find. Although it’s sad to think that we may never see another TMNT LEGO set come out, it’s nice to know that there is a silver lining in the form of TMNT Mega Bloks. Initially, fans didn’t know what to expect from the upcoming Mega Bloks line, but as of yesterday we finally received our first hint of what is to come when the company tweeted a picture of the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toys.

Needless to say, these actually look like some pretty well crafted TMNT toys. As a matter of fact, one could easily say that certain aspects of these action figures look even better than the TMNT Legos. For one thing, it appears that at least Mikey and Donnie each have painted pupils, which makes them look much more similar to their counterparts in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Although Raph and Leo don’t have this feature, it’s entirely possible that they could be from a more action oriented set in the TMNT Mega Bloks line. In addition to these features, it would also appear that each character has more accessories and a much better mold than we saw from the LEGO sets.
Most toy collectors will tell you that Mega Bloks is nowhere near as good as LEGO, but the truth is that sometimes they manage to pull off some impressive play sets. If this image is any indication, it would appear that they may have managed to do just that with their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line. This won’t be the first time that we’ve seen Mega Bloks take on the Ninja Turtles, as they made a few sets based on the 4Kids series back in the day. To be honest, this line looks like it could be even better than the 2K3 sets, and that is definitely promising. The TMNT Mega Bloks sets will hit the streets on January 1st, 2016. Who knows? You might even find a few of them hitting store shelves before the holidays! Keep an eye out for these awesome TMNT toys in the next few months!
