Batman/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III Issue 6

Is this the end of the multiverse?! 

Krang has steered his Ultra-technodrome into the skies above the new Earth he sought to conquer and rebuild in his own image. He thought the heroes of the worlds he’d conquered were down for the count, but now he faces two sets of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, two Batmen and a whole host of angry heroes looking to save their worlds once and for all. If Krang can’t own the Multiverse, then he will destroy it!

Batmen. Robins. Ninja Turtles in color. Ninja Turtles in black and white. Casey Jones fighting back to back with The Shredder. It’s almost hard to believe that this is what we’re getting albeit this is the third Batman/TMNT crossover. But we’ve made it to the final issue of what might be the last time we see The Dark Knight and our Heroes in a Halfshell. We conclude with a fun ride that was certainly worth the time and dimes for comic readers worldwide. 

Trilogies are tough and the 3rd outing of Batman/TMNT has proven to break that “curse” that we see in so much pop culture and media. We’re thrown into the middle of a war in Issue 6 and not only do we have to get our actions worth, but also provide a thrilling and somber conclusion to these legendary characters. Tynion’s writing is peak throughout this series as he proves that he is respectful and caring for both the world of the Caped Crusader and our Ninja Turtles. He truly makes every speech bubble count and says a lot with much less. I shot though this entire series due to its brisk pace and interesting turns as both a Batman and TMNT fan. Freddie Williams artwork always looks fantastic, with Issue 6 in particular being purely chaotic at times. Yet we stay focused page-to-page because this series gushes such great writing and beautiful artwork. 

And though the conclusion felt somewhat predictable, the ride to get there is what made this such a fun ride through the fandom of these two universes. 

Series Conclusion: Batman/TMNT 3 proved to be a fun and wild outing for both beloved franchises. Tynion’s writing never dipped throughout the six issue series as we were provided with enough action and reflection to give this adventure some weight and stakes. I look forward to his run on Batman since he seems to really get the character. Williams artwork proves to be “poster worthy” with tons of gorgeous detail and linework yet never looks too busy in splash pages or crowded panels. If you’re a fan of the previous Batman/TMNT adventures or simply dug the new animated film that hit shelves, I truly recommend this third six issue series. I’d say pick up the trade paperback, order a stack of pizzas, and stay in for the night. You won’t regret it, dudes!

Batman/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III Issue 5

The crisis in a half shell continues! 

 Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles think they’ve figured out how to tear apart Krang’s Combined Multiverse and restore their reality. But Krang has planned this moment for years. With his robot army, he’s ready to destroy them all. And if Batman can’t remember the last missing piece in his life, there may be no hope left!

We’re now at the second-to-last issue of Batman/TMNT 3 and everything has come together at this point to form a breakneck issue 5 as we speed ahead to what is sure to be an epic conclusion. This title started slow and heavy but had enough fanboy spark to keep you glued to every panel and page. The past two issues have been nothing but nonstop action. The ultimate dimension-reality-ripping onslaught hits (what feels like) a peak in issue 5. Tynion’s writing, while great, takes a back seat lately to Freddie Williams epic artistic layouts of turtles, bats, brains, and ninjas duking it out into eternity. 

Issue 5 offers some great moments such as our modern TMNT teaming up (yet again) with Eastman and Laird’s original incarnations, Shredder and Splinter fighting alongside each other, and some great Batman character development since this series seems to mostly be Turtle focused (no complaints here though). This whole issue reads like a spinning charge, as if we’re about to take off at any minute into some sort of crazy comic climax. And that’s what we’re about to do exactly…when the final issue (#6) rolls out. This another great chapter in which Batman and every Turtle shine in their own way as we march forward to the conclusion of Batman and TMNT 3. I am sad to see this series conclude…but I feel as though we were given the perfect length and have gone everywhere we possibly can go from here. So raise a warm slice to issue 6 and let’s end this the right way! Cowabunga!

Batman/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III Issue 4

The crisis in a half shell continues! 

 Batman and the Turtles grapple with the laws of Krang’s combined universe, desperate to return their two worlds to their original states. But there are some who do not want things set right. In this reality, the Laughing Man runs the Smile Clan, the most dangerous criminal organization ever to strike New Gotham City-and that’s how he wants things to stay! He’ll kill anyone who gets in his way…even the Shredder!

We’re more than halfway through the third installment in the Batman/TMNT universe and issue 4 kicks things into full gear for an explosive action packed issue that doesn’t slow down. This particular issue has been my favorite in the series so far, but that’s only because the story leading up to this point has been told so well. Tynion’s pacing is always on point but I loved the breakneck speed that Issue 4 takes. We know the stakes. We know what needs to be done. Now we just need to strap in with Batman and the TMNT and go along for the ride. Towards the end of this issue I realized I can probably read a whole book of just Batman and Master Splinter having a conversation. 

Freddie Williams continues to nail the artwork in Issue 4. I especially love the spotlight put on the Laughing Man and his overall design in this comic. The Shredder himself shines as a pure unfiltered badass this time around. Moving forward we are going into issue 5 with even higher stakes and crazier takes! I’m really thrilled with how this series is going so far as both a longtime Batman and Ninja Turtles fan. We seem to be past the crazy combo characters and fanfare, and the past couple issues have been story and action that matters. That being said, I’m onboard this title for it’s last 2 issues. And if is this the last time Batman and the Ninja Turtles meet, it’s turning out to be one heck of an adventure to go out on.

Batman/ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III Issue 3

The crisis in a half shell continues! 

The origin of Batman…together with the origin of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? The stories are familiar, but through the prism of this altered reality, clearly not the same. An uneasy feeling sets in that everything is not what it seems. But the Laughing Man pays a visit to a familiar Turtles ally to make sure this world stays exactly as Krang has remade it.

We’ve met the halfway mark in this exciting series as the TMNT and Batman continue to thrill and keep you on the edge of your seat in what is another great chapter of this crossover saga. Krang is ripping through realties, Batman is a turtle-bro, and Mirage-Raph is filling in the mystery the best he can! This particular issue starts strong with the combined origin of Batman and the TMNT that surprisingly fits like a glove thanks to clever writing of Tynion. 

Storywise this issue is very narrative heavy, as it should be seeing as the last 2 issues were very action packed. But that isn’t a knock in the slightest, as everything moves at a brisk pace and continues to be a real page turner. We spend some time with April O’Neil and even get a glimpse at Orku Saki. Freddie Williams artwork remains gritty yet pretty and continues to feel as sort of a halfway point between Eastman and Laird’s original style mixed with his own unique take.  

We’re now moving forward and we’re in the meat and potatoes of this story. We’re not getting the fanservice and nods like the previous 2 issues, which is just fine, as now the story is coming into its own. We end this issue with another “Oh dang!” moment, and I look forward to issue 4 now that the real Shredder is thrown into the mix. Cowabunga, baby.

The Adventures Of Russian Bootleg Ninja Turtles

The late 1980s throughout the early 1990s was arguably the height of Turtlemania. During that time slapping the image of one or all of our favorite turtle brethren almost always led to dollar signs. I’ve done a lot of research into the downright bizarre marketing of the TMNT through the decades of my fandom. From nasty looking bootlegs figures to the official Ninja Turtles shaving kit, it’s safe to say that during this era “Cowabunga” made cold hard cash.

TMNT always had your merchandising needs covered…no matter how hard you hit rock bottom.

And while the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were taking on Krang and Shredder on our televisions and in our comic books, Russia had the Ninja Turtles doing things a little differently in the form of literature. “Ninja Turtles” was a series of 33 illustrated children’s books made possible by Minsk Publishing sometime around the late 1980s through the mid 1990s. It is very difficult to find any reliable information on this series. But, as fans, we do know they are very bootlegged. Yet upon viewing the illustrations within these wondrous pirated pieces, I can’t help but to think they may just be 33 of the most breathtaking adventures the TMNT have ever embarked on.

With such imaginative and inspiring titles as, “Ninja Turtles Against Mafia”, “Ninja Turtles Against The Long Old Man” , and “Ninja Turtles and Privy Counselor” I wouldn’t know a soul who wouldn’t want to crack open one of these bad boys and starting reading. These versions of the TMNT don’t seem to stick to New York City, in fact, they don’t seem to stick to any type of logical reality within any sort of actual time frame. Outerspace, third world villages, war torn towns, Egypt, military bases, and dinosaur island(s) seem to be the regular stomping grounds of these heroes in a halfshell.

If we’re infringing on copyright with the Ninja Turtles, we might as well go all the way with various crossovers. Which is why these Turtles seems to be clashing with The Predator, the Tall Man from Phantasm, a Freddy Krueger inspired witch, Jason Vorhees, and straight up friggen’ Batman. If you’re going to tread troubled water using the TMNT without permission, why not go for so many characters it would just be a legal headache?

I can only speak for myself when I say I devoured anything “Ninja Turtles” as child due to my lack of quality control. Seeing these bizarre works of bootlegged fanfiction make me wonder what little Russian boys and girls think of the TMNT of their day if they grew up on these books. We now live in an era where the Turtles have crossed paths with Batman, Ghostbusters, Power Rangers, as well as themselves. But, I mean, if you ever wondered how they’d get along with The Predator, a Xenomorph, or the Tall Man from Phantasm…then look no further. You can find these glorious works of art from these books right here. I highly advise you spend a quiet evening taking these in with your favorite kind of medium thin crust and a fine glass of Rose’. You won’t regret it.
