Over the past few weeks, the turtles have seen a lot of attention in the gaming world. Not only have we seen them in both Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 and a new independent game called Punch Club, but there are strong indications that we will see a brand new title from Platinum Games released to consoles sometime in the near future. Amid all of this gaming action, it might be surprising to learn that there’s actually a new TMNT game out on the market right now.
Okay, so it’s a mobile game, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be fun. After all, with studios like Konami attempting to enter the mobile market in a big way, it’s fair to say that smartphones have become just as important to gaming as any one console. TMNT: Portal Power is a side scrolling beat ’em up in the style of the traditional Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games. Sure, the controls are a bit different, but that’s to be expected with any mobile game. Speaking of controls, Portal Power actually gives you command of either all four turtles together or just one of them individually. In other words, the style of gameplay is totally up to you.
As you traverse each level with the turtles, you’ll discover a variety of power-ups just waiting to be used. Some of these power-ups are fairly original creations, while others are directly inspired by events from Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. This is a fitting choice, as the design of the turtles themselves is based on the hit television show. They even went to the lengths of bringing the voice actors from the show in to perform their roles in Portal Power, which definitely adds a little authenticity to the game.
If you can’t wait for Mutants in Manhattan to be released and merely skateboarding as the Ninja Turtles simply isn’t doing it for you, then it might be time to check out TMNT: Portal Power. You’ll find the game in the app store for $4.99 – a pretty good price when factoring in the amount of effort they have put into the title. Say what you will about mobile gaming, but this definitely looks like a fun TMNT game.
