The crisis in a half shell continues! 

 Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles think they’ve figured out how to tear apart Krang’s Combined Multiverse and restore their reality. But Krang has planned this moment for years. With his robot army, he’s ready to destroy them all. And if Batman can’t remember the last missing piece in his life, there may be no hope left!

We’re now at the second-to-last issue of Batman/TMNT 3 and everything has come together at this point to form a breakneck issue 5 as we speed ahead to what is sure to be an epic conclusion. This title started slow and heavy but had enough fanboy spark to keep you glued to every panel and page. The past two issues have been nothing but nonstop action. The ultimate dimension-reality-ripping onslaught hits (what feels like) a peak in issue 5. Tynion’s writing, while great, takes a back seat lately to Freddie Williams epic artistic layouts of turtles, bats, brains, and ninjas duking it out into eternity. 

Issue 5 offers some great moments such as our modern TMNT teaming up (yet again) with Eastman and Laird’s original incarnations, Shredder and Splinter fighting alongside each other, and some great Batman character development since this series seems to mostly be Turtle focused (no complaints here though). This whole issue reads like a spinning charge, as if we’re about to take off at any minute into some sort of crazy comic climax. And that’s what we’re about to do exactly…when the final issue (#6) rolls out. This another great chapter in which Batman and every Turtle shine in their own way as we march forward to the conclusion of Batman and TMNT 3. I am sad to see this series conclude…but I feel as though we were given the perfect length and have gone everywhere we possibly can go from here. So raise a warm slice to issue 6 and let’s end this the right way! Cowabunga!

DC Comics Announces “Batman/TMNT II” For December

The original crossover between Gotham’s Dark Knight and New York’s Heroes in a Half-Shell was one of the biggest surprises of 2015 because of how genuinely good it was. Now, the same creative team of James Tynion IV and Freddie E. Williams II returns with an all new adventure that sees these comic book icons reunite once more.

From DC’s official press release:

Gotham’s Dark Knight joins forces with New York’s Heroes in A Half-Shell this December as DC Entertainment and IDW Publishing today announced plans for BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II, a six-issue follow up to the smash-hit crossover series of 2015. Writer James Tynion IV (BATMAN, DETECTIVE COMICS) and artist Freddie Williams II (HE-MAN/THUNDERCATS) will reunite for this second meeting of two icons of pop culture.

“What DC and IDW started with Batman/TMNT in 2015 continues to spark interest with fans of these characters that have worldwide recognition,” said DC SVP Editorial Strategy & Administration, Hank Kanalz. “We can’t wait to see what James and Freddie deliver this time around.”

When Donatello goes looking for a new mentor to help him improve his fighting skills, he opens a doorway to another reality, hoping to summon the Turtles’ one-time ally, Batman. But instead, he gets sent to Gotham City and someone else comes through the open portal —Bane! Suddenly, there’s a new gang boss in New York and he’s out to unite all the other bad guys under him. Can Donnie get back in time and bring Batman with him to help his brothers before Bane causes irreparable destruction?

As an added bonus for fans, the first two issues will release in December before going monthly. Issue #1 hits comics retailers and digital outlets on December 6, with issue #2 following two weeks later on December 20.

“The original crossover between Batman and the Turtles was met with such positive enthusiasm from the fans, that it was only a matter of time before their paths crossed again,” said IDW President and COO, Greg Goldstein. “Fans have themselves to thank for making this a reality, yet again, and we’re confident that we can deliver the goods to meet their expectations with our talented creative team returning for round two.”

In addition to covers by Williams II, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-creator Kevin Eastman will illustrate variant covers for the series.

Actor Behind Raphael Wants to Play Shazam in New DC Comics Film

When Paramount first announced the actors who would portray our heroes in a half shell in the latest TMNT reboots, it didn’t exactly surprise anyone. After all, these guys were just going to walk around wearing funny looking suits that would be replaced by CGI characters in the long run. Heck, Paramount even made the decision to replace their voices in post, which meant that the actual people who played the turtles were all but forgotten. That being said, one of the most notable names behind those CGI masks was definitely Alan Ritchson, the man who took on the role of Raphael.

Ritchson was perhaps best known as the actor who played Aquaman in the hit series Smallville, which meant that he had plenty of experience in the role of a hero. Although he only really acted out the movements of Raphael, his performance was still pretty good. Now that he’s had a few opportunities to play super heroes, it’s fair to say that his resume is looking decent in a world filled with potential comic book movies on the horizon. One of those films is Shazam, and it looks like Alan has an interest in the title role.

To be clear, this rumor isn’t exactly new, but it is looking even more possible as the production date grows near. Ritchson has been teasing fans with the possibility since 2016, and he recently posted yet another tweet suggesting that this might actually happen. Previous rumors had Armie Hammer taking the role, but he has since confirmed that this isn’t the case. Considering Ritchson’s likeness to the super hero, it would definitely be fitting to see him take on Shazam.

Heck, all he would need is a little bit of makeup and he’d look exactly like Shazam! Given his previous experience as a DC Comics character in Smallville, something tells me he would be an excellent fit for the hero. Although I didn’t see this coming, something tells me that the fans would be perfectly happy with this casting decision. Here’s hoping that the man behind Raphael’s actions gets the opportunity to play a somewhat more substantial role in this planned DC Comics movie.

Top 5 Turtley Awesome Moments of 2016

At the end of 2015, there were a lot of reasons to look forward to 2016. The new year promised a new movie, a new video game, and even some awesome new TMNT figures. Everything was looking pretty good for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and there wasn’t much of a reason to feel any concern about the future of the franchise.

Unfortunately, this year hasn’t exactly been as kind to our heroes in a half shell as we would have hoped. After a bomb at the box office that effectively put an end to the most recent film franchise, the future isn’t looking very bright for the turtles. As if a failed movie weren’t bad enough, Platinum Games also failed to impress with their release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhattan. To cap it all off, rumors have recently been spreading that Nickelodeon may have plans to cancel their TMNT series after its fifth season.

Needless to say, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about the future of this property. To be fair, there are also quite a few reasons to remain hopeful, because 2016 wasn’t all bad news for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. As a matter of fact, there were quite a few amazing developments over the past twelve months, and we have yet to see some of them come to fruition. With that in mind, let’s take a look at five turtley awesome moments from 2016!

IDW Crowdfunded an Amazing TMNT Board Game

Earlier this year, IDW launched a crowdfunding project on Kickstarter to develop a brand new board game based on their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. Shellheads went above and beyond to make Shadows of the Past a reality, as IDW gathered enough funds to publish the base game along with several additional items. The game took a few months to officially release, but it is now available for purchase at several retail locations. According to many fans, this is one of the best TMNT games that has ever been created.

Stan Sakai Announced a TMNT/Usagi Yojimbo Crossover

For years, fans have been wondering if the rabbit ronin would ever team up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles again. As comic conventions began to pop up around the country, rumors surfaced that Miyamoto Usagi was about to make a big comeback in the TMNT universe. Sadly, it took a month or two before we had any confirmation of these rumors, but creator Stan Sakai has since announced that there are indeed plans for Usagi Yojimbo to appear in Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know if his appearance will be anything more than a cameo, but there are indications that this may be the case.

We Received Three New TMNT Comic Spinoffs

Although the turtles may not have impressed in the world of movies and video games, it’s safe to say they had a pretty good year at the comic book shop. The end of 2015 brought us our first Batman/TMNT crossover comic, and it was so successful that IDW decided to work with DC Comics to produce a spinoff of that series. As if that weren’t cool enough, they also developed two new comics entitled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Universe and Bebop & Rocksteady Destroy Everything. All of their new projects have been fairly successful, and it looks like our heroes in a half shell still have a pretty bright future between the panels.

Although we have seen quite a few amazing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles collectibles in the past, 2016 was a particularly good year for TMNT toy collectors. Several companies unveiled plans for some of the most beautiful figures we’ve ever seen, with NECA leading the charge. Not only did they finally begin production on their 90’s TMNT movie figures, but they also produced a set of limited edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade figures as well. Companies such as Good Smile, S.H. Figuarts and Prime 1 Studio have many amazing figurines and statues planned for the near future, and it was a blast to discover all of them as they were unveiled earlier this year.

Nickelodeon Released an Epic ’87 TMNT Crossover Episode

In a move that echoed Turtles Forever, Nickelodeon brought the original voice actors from the 1987 animated series back for an awesome crossover episode. How good was it? Well, it was recently nominated for an Annie Award. Not only was this an incredibly popular episode of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but it was also highly rated by the critics. Nostalgia sells well, and there’s no better way to pay homage to those that came before you than by bringing them on to reprise their roles!

In the end, it’s fair to say that 2016 wasn’t the best year that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have ever seen. That being said, there were quite a few accomplishments and announcements that made this year pretty memorable for our heroes in a half shell. Although there is reason to be concerned about their future, there is also a lot to look forward to in 2017. Don’t believe us? This is one of the hottest toys of the year. It’s already sold out in a lot of locations, but you might be able to find it at a store near you. RC Mikey is a Walmart exclusive, but you can also find this TMNT toy being sold on the secondhand market. Sadly, that may be your best bet at this point, but that’s what happens when you’re talking about one of the most popular toys of 2016! If you can find it, this would be an excellent TMNT gift.

If you’re still not sure what to get the shellhead on your list, let us take care of it! For as low as $9.99, you can get the TMNT fan in your family a box of surprise Ninja Turtle goodies! Heck, this could even be a good idea for stocking stuffers if you want to avoid any extra shopping. As long as you order the TMNT Box by December 14th, they guarantee that it will arrive by December 25th! Oh, and don’t take my word for it, but I hear tell that this month’s box includes a TMNT hoodie! Keep that in mind before deciding what you want to do for your fellow Ninja Turtle fans this holiday season.

It may not have been a popular film, but there are still a lot of shellheads out there who have yet to see Out of the Shadows. Even if they aren’t entirely interested, something tells me that most fans wouldn’t mind receiving this movie as a TMNT gift. After all, it’s not like they are paying for it, and at least then they can finally check out the movie. This probably shouldn’t be your first and only gift idea, but it’s worth keeping in mind if you can’t think of anything else. At the very least, this version comes in a cool lunchbox that includes both films for one low price!

If you’ve got an artist in the family, this TMNT coloring book is an absolute must. Adult coloring books are becoming all the rage, because they can be both calming and nostalgic. Even older children appreciate some of the intricate designs you’ll find in these kinds of books. Speaking as someone who actually ordered this shortly after it was released earlier this summer, I can confirm that the pages are heavy duty and very fun to color. Combine this with a box of colored pencils and you should have one happy TMNT fan!

For the younger TMNT fans in your family, you might want to consider yet another very popular toy item for this holiday season. If your young one has asked for the RC Mikey toy above, you may also want to consider getting them their own TMNT skateboard! Skateboarding can be a lot of fun, and this could also represent an opportunity to spend some time with your little shellheads outside. In addition to the skateboard, you will also find a really cool TMNT helmet that can make your kid look just like their favorite Ninja Turtle. Don’t forget to complete the set with TMNT safety pads for their elbows and knees!

This is a TMNT gift that most fans probably won’t have by the time the holidays roll around, because it won’t even be released until December 13th! If you know any shellheads who are currently collecting Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series on DVD, help them continue their collection with the latest DVD set. Earth’s Last Stand includes several episodes from the fourth season of the show, so it should be a pretty good choice for anyone who enjoys Nick’s take on the Ninja Turtles.

This miniseries of comics was a big hit in the fall of 2015, and it has now been collected into a beautiful hardcover book! For only $15, you can give the gift of perhaps the most turtley awesome crossover in the history of comic books! This series was so popular that it spawned an offshoot entitled Batman/TMNT Adventures which is based on the universe of Batman: The Animated Series. If you know someone who is a fan of both Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, do yourself a favor and get them this beautiful collection of comics as a wonderful TMNT gift.
