Turtle Bits: New TMNT Series Gets Second Season, More TMNT LEGO Sets Unveiled

by Zach Gasior

Nickelodeon’s new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series has been quite a big hit, hasn’t it? With a line of toys prepared for the release of the show and a new LEGO set coming about, it appeared as if Nick knew that they had something special on their hands. Whether or not they were certain, it didn’t take them long to make up their minds about the future of the show, as it was announced mere days after the premiere that they would be picking it up for a second season. With all of the awesome news surrounding the series, this tidbit seems to have been lost in the noise, but it’s still a pretty big deal. After all, this means that we’ll be seeing the TMNT on TV for at least another year! With the mostly positive reception the show has received, I’m sure fans are hoping for much more than just a second season, but renewing the series mere days after its premiere has got to be a good sign.

Another good sign about the success of the new series comes in the form of all the toys being made. Much like when Turtle Fever first found its way into our hearts when we were kids, a large library of awesome TMNT toys and gear is quickly being crafted for retail. One of the biggest recent examples of this came from the news that LEGO would be developing a new set based on the series. What began as a rumor (first revealed here in Turtle Bits many weeks back) quickly developed into reality. However, until recently only one set had been unveiled to the fans. Now we have two more sets to gawk at until we can get our hands on them! The two sets are #39102 – Stealth Shell in Pursuit and #39103  – Turtle Lair Attack. As you can no doubt tell from the pictures, one of these is a smaller collection which will no doubt be sold in the budget range, while the other is a full fledged play set with five mini-figures, including Splinter!

Needless to say, it would appear as if our heroes in a half shell are doing alright. But what about future projects with the TMNT? What about the much ballyhooed film from Michael Bay? Well, all signs indicate that this film is still going to happen. In fact, at a recent turtle themed event in London, they decided to show off one of the first official previews for the new film. The trailer was little more than a CG-Animated short designed to show off some of the ideas behind the new Ninja Turtles film, but it apparently drew a lot of applause from the crowd. Granted, this wasn’t exactly a crowd full of fans, but rather to people who are generally interested in making money off of the brand. As such, their views are probably going to be a little bit skewed, but it’s still interesting to note that they apparently liked what they saw. Is Michael Bay’s project as doomed as the fans think it is? Only time will tell. Oh well, at least we know that we’ve got two full seasons of Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to look forward to!
